It was a favorite spot especially for those of us living in the Bryan Hall complex. Jim Seu was a W&M graduate and a former Sigma Nu and a lot of the jocks patronized the place. Jeff Cohen [whose jersey hangs in Kaplan Arena] and his buddies permanently occupied a prime table there. For many years after graduation my wife and I met friends there for lunch before the Homecoming game.
I think the expansion into the New Town location was a financial disaster for the Green Leafe owners. The food was pretty good and we ate there frequently but it was obviously not catching on and not well managed. When the restaurant closed, the building stood empty for several years before Pauls Deli took over - and seem to be doing very well at this location.
The other owner of the Colonial was Ed O'Connell. It was a hangout for local politicos as well as students. The Round Table was nightly occupied by judges, attorneys and notables. I had a sweet job there in the late 60s picking up kegs on Sunday morning so they wouldn't get lost or stolen. Two or three trips to the frats in Ed's rattletrap station wagon and I'd make $40-$50, which was serious money in those days.
I was there the night the Green Leafe opened. The Kerr family later sold the business to Glen Gormley who had worked there while in school. I ran the Green Leafe softball team for about ten years after Glen bought the place. We had a helluva team with many former Tribe players including Glen Bodner and Bob Solderitch. Once, after losing two games in a row, Bodnar and Rick Jones showed up at pre-game practice with two boxes full of skirts and announced that if we were going to play like girls, we should dress like girls. We took the field that night in skirts against a local redneck team, and the opponents were stupefied. The final was like 20-2, with Bodnar flying around the field in a flowing, olive drab number.
Rednecks ! In these days of political correctioness should not these men be referred to as something like ... Agricon Americans (Agriculture Construction Americans) ?
Now you know as well as I do that the only people still open to ridicule are Rednecks and other conservatives.
I miss GSU Pike.
Me too! The Gay Hillbillies! Lemonade moonshine and moonshine soaked cherries. Who knew?

The food at the Green Leafe was always terrible, so perhaps with the availability of good beer elsewhere there business flopped dramatically.
The Green Leafe used to have some of the better wings in town, along with a pretty decent burger and a fair amount of froofy food. I always preferred it to Paul's, but that was also due to their relative scotch selections.

I've never considered myself a redneck, but a "good ole country boy" instead. There are important differences that many miss in these classifications. Both are still open game for ridicule from the PC crowd, but at least we know which restrooms to use.

Sounds awesome! Hope they never change the uphill narrow-hallway men's bathroom
It actually should help them survive all being owned by the same guy...will ensure less overlap of style/offerings.
Big question: Will there still be a mug night and will they still honor the old mugs?

This new ownership will do the right thing; whatever that is. How about some sort of seafood oriented college joint?

RE: The Green Leafe
Joe Megale, a former W&M football player, was Seu's partner in the original Colonial and was for a number of years. Seu, by the way, was known as "Suitcase" by many...a unique nickname if there ever was one.
There used to be as regular Friday night poker game in the Colonial..held, amazingly, while the restaurant
was open and had diners there. A couple of the Williamsburg police were regular players along with W&M
athletes--only from New Jersey and NY), several of the town's more unsavory characters (including a guy known only as "Checkered Shirt" as he always wore the same checkered shirt). The game would start around six or seven and go all night. Megale and Seu would drift in and out of the game as would, in his chef's clothes, the chef!
The menu featured Italian food, mainly pizza and rigatoni.

He was called suitcase because he never unpacked his bags during his first semester at school. He always threatened to go "home", but he made Williamsburg his home for the next 50 years. A "new" Colonial would be a good fixture there. Open all three meals with a good night life. You could get a can of Schlitz opened with a can opener and a pizza. Those were very different days. I remember them well.

Wow, just found this thread as i was cruising to see what your all thoughts reactions to the ncstate game....
Shame about the Green Leafe. Its where I first met my wife , while she was attending W&M in the mid 80s. I being at the Coast Guard Training Center in Yorktown for training. had just stopped in their for a beer while exploring the area. Her and her friends where having dinner there...Our first Date was to Busch Gardens. Well the rest is history...Since our Daughter goes to JMU we looked forward every other year coming to zable and reliving memories while enjoying a good football game.
Has it reopened yet?

I don't know how many of you watch the TV show, Quantico, but they gave a "sort of" shoutout to the Leafe on last Monday's show. The CIA agents-to-be were training at "The Farm" at Camp Peary (nice shot of the front gate) and after the first day of training, the instructors sent them to The Bold Leafe Cafe, Williamsburg's best hangout.
The scene's did have the feel (a bit) of the Green Leafe, with dark wood tables and bar.
Sort of cool, I got a chuckle from it.

All students living on campus need to be on a meal plan? That definitely will hurt other local dining businesses especially if you combine that with Sodexo getting 13% of dining dollar sales being paid at those restaurants - not sure if all places have that % but at least Mooyah did according to the article.

They need to charge rent that is appropriate for the space where the businesses can be profitable...

Apparently the only business which they want to be profitable is the W&M Real Estate Commission itself.

Wow,
Expect to see the catering business provide a lot of goodies to tailgaters. My wife and kids may not eat another hamburger/hot dog from concessions.
