The Fickleness of our fan base is astounding
I will admit it took me quite a while to come around on JP. But he could not get it done at Memphis. This board has been very clear on their disdain for him. So much that the majority opinion was that anything is better than JP.

then we hire a coach with a national championship raining and we are frustrated.

Have we ever had a coach with the national championship ring at Memphis?

Don't we want to win?

Is tubby a winner?

I get the money discussions but this is a great hire. I'm very pleased.

I think the issue is that we all expected to swing for the fences and hit a homerun. True the alternative would have been being stuck with Josh. None of us wanted that. I think everyone will come around once this has settled in.

For me the question is, could we have done better? If not Williams and not Marshall was there anyone else that we could have gotten?

Cautiously optimistic.

Have to see the assistants and how recruiting finishes out.

I'm coming around to it. I think the big issue most of us have is that it doesn't appear that we even tried to go after Marshall, Buzz or Forbes

They tried about as hard as Spinks did against Tyson.

The realization that your program is not as big a deal as you thought it was upsets some people.

There were a few that wanted Buzz or Marshall, but most just wanted a hungry up and comer like McCall, Forbes or Musselman. Guys that are go getters and know how the "game" is played. Tubby is a great coach, I think we may be surprised. But I'm tired of people running down our fan base. We got some fans that know basketball and know what all that entails here. I'm gonna wait and see what happens. The 2018 and 2019 local classes are loaded. If he can't get the majority of those guys with his record and history then we will know it was not a good hire. I'm holding out hope that he will do what's necessary.

Not a WOW hire, but definitely an upgrade. I am glad the kids are getting a seasoned coach

I am on board. If Tubby gets us back to top of conference, and back to dancing again; our program will be a "blue blood" in a few years.
We will then be in a better position for the Gregg and Archie's for our next coach.

Welcome Tubby.

Welcome Tubby.

No chance Memphis ever becomes a 'blue blood'. The role of the school is not set up to become one.

They are already at their "Memphis's". The next step is at the top.

Nah. What is upsetting is the folks in charge chose not to be as big a deal as the program is.

They didn't want to take on a big contract with a huge buyout...but they could've.

I agree that we all would have liked to have heard "Gregg Marshall is the new coach of Memphis" or "Buzz Williams is the new coach at Memphis" but hiring Tubby Smith at the state the program is right now, in my mind, stabilizes things for a program that is in desperate need of stabilization. Hiring Penny as an assistant would be icing on the cake for me. Everyone has a right to analyze his resume but I'm getting on board with the hire.

Yep.

AD/Pres/Boosters: "Hey, we're big time with a boatload of cash and going to get Gregg Marshall"

GM: "Here are my terms."

AD/Pres/Boosters: (one wets pants, another faints) "Well, we tried."

That kind of logic will keep us "who we are" then.
