Nah. What is upsetting is the folks in charge chose not to be as big a deal as the program is.
They didn't want to take on a big contract with a huge buyout...but they could've.
I get what you are saying, and of course agree. To me, its the same difference. We are who we are.
That kind of logic will keep us "who we are" then.
Hence why I am not pleased with this hire.

In the words of someone else "I think U of M could have hired Jesus Christ and their would still be fans that complained." No pleasing everyone. I am on board and plan to hope for the best!

All of this (although I'm one of the ones who wanted Buzz.)

Yep. I don't care who we hired, there would be a segment who would find something to complain about.

RE: The Fickleness of our fan base is astounding
From my perspective it isn't fickle...it is just "why?" considering all the caveats.
"IF Tubby can get some good assistants to recruit, THEN I'll be happy."
"Sure he didn't win a lot at some crappy P5 programs, but he outpaces their history--that's a sign of a good coach."
"Any decent coach can get Memphis kids--they all deep down want to come here."
So, with those parameters, HAVING to get Tubby doesn't seem to be necessary.
I guess the theory is he is an x&o guy and will be able to coach up talented kids that his hotshot assistants will get, even though you don't need hotshot assistants because Memphis kids really want to come to Memphis.
There are quite a few mid-pack P5 coaches who are outperforming their program.
I still, though, can't see how Forbes was overlooked. That one is just baffling. Who, of all people, first brought Forbes back after the show cause? Gregg Marshall. I doubt Marshall would have brought him into the fold if he thought Forbes was a risk.

He only recruits 1 star players, doesn't like the elite, would be bad fit in Memphis

If we could manage to bring back John Wooden there will be people complaining that he hasn't done anything recently. No joking!

We don't know what the other parties or the other parties' agents were asking. One would have been leaving the ACC. The other leaving a comfortable job where he can win.
They may have been asking for the moon. Credit our guys for not panicking and making another stupid deal. Seems like Tubby was impressed and he's been to a few dances.

We CANNOT afford it to be anything but a good hire. Somebody better see to it that Tubby gets to those local classes with a good recruiting assistant this year while he also immediately attends to getting whatever players/transfers he needs to round out those graduated or departed from this most recent year's team. I think Tubby has the bearing and record to command respect from the players (something Josh had a hard time doing from the get-go) and just needs to make sure he gets on the recruiting side of this pronto.

RE: The Fickleness of our fan base is astounding
We have been so beat down by the Josh regime, we doubt ourselves. I agree that the only thing holding us back from greatness has been a flippant attitude about sports from the previous administrations. After all we were a Teachers College at one time. Had we kept the ball rolling after Bartow, who knows what we might have been. But as it is, we are who we are and that's a program who finally gets sports. Tubby Smith has the pedigree to bring the basketball program back from the dead. I hope in the next few years to finally hear an ESPN announcer say once again: "That was a great loss to Memphis", instead of the recent, "That was a bad loss to Memphis."

At least you'll go to the games and cheer for Tubby's team. My boy HoopDreams is just gonna sit around in front of his computer and wait for the first chance to ***** after Tubby loses a game or two.

BS on that, here is what happened, I was a little pissed that we contacted Marshall at all:
Us: What would it take to get you to come here?
Marshall: He are my demands
Us: Ok we will do that
Marshall : I have changed my demands
Us: We should have listed to what they say about you
