my buddy, who works with Leon Mitchell (who is close to Penny), said Penny wouldn't do it ... but, c'mon Penny! Pleaseeeee!

Why do people want Penny on the staff? I don't get it.

Because people want Penny to learn how to be a college coach so he can be the 19th Memphis Tigers coach.

Maybe we can do better 4-5 years from now. Just a thought.

To be honest, if Penny is a good or great coach, it would be nice to have him coaching the Tigers. He'd always be loyal to the program and he would be a source of pride.

Cal, Past, and now Tubby are Mercenaries... Penny would be a favored son.

I'm not used to seeing the little chubby kid. He looks so out of place.

I'd just hate to see it if he didn't end up being a great coach. Imagine a Josh situation with Penny.

More sad would be a Larry Finch situation.

It's one thing to be underwhelming then going downhill.

It's another to be a legend, having success, looking like you're about to go downhill and being kicked out before you've had a chance to fix things.

I dont see Penny being a clipboard holder for 2 or 3 years. If he is, awesome.

Im cool with this with or without. Vast improvement over Pastner, and even if we dont get in the tourney, we should see improvements in play of every player, as they finally move towards their potentials.

I hear people say this, but Rod Strickland and Damon Stoudamire had big paydays too and they did it.

It's about Penny's ambitions. If he wants to coach, he'd do it. Damon Stoudamire made a hundred million in NBA salaries.

True, but he's coaching now, in his hometown, on his terms, and gets to keep his golf handicap low, without doing what they have felt they had to do, and affects young Memphians lives. To do what they did, may require an appetite to leave town, and move a lot, before landing a Memphis HC.

I just think he reached a status or personality where those terms are narrower for him than other former centimillionaire all stars. Justified or not.

Maybe he joins Tubby's staff. Tubby golfs. If they both want it, and there are no illusions about the future for anyone, great. Maybe high school coaching gets old, maybe it already has, I dont have an idea.

You could have all the knowledge in the world and not have "it".

JP doesn't have "it". Tubby has "it". Just hope he is really into the job.

I thought he was fine. He kinda rambled on at times but overall the questions got answered. He explained reasons why he has the morals and values he does. Mentioned "style of play" and "system".

He's proven. He coached at Kentucky, won a title as a head coach, came up through the coaching ranks from high school, to assistant to head coach, he's turned 2 **** programs/teams into NCAA teams and left both of them in better positions than when he got to them his last 2 gigs.

I'm anxious to see what the staff will look like once complete. I'm not worried about his recruiting here. He will get his pick most years from the city, and will be able to sell Memphis and his resume to kids outside of it.

I like his morals and values. I like what he stands for.

Now we get to see how it all plays out. Looking forward to good basketball.

He knows what he needs to do. He's got plenty of scholarships to play with. Tons of grad transfers on the board to fill some slots so he can go full on recruiting wise this season.

I'm ready to see what we can do!

It was brutal to listen to and quite boring. However he is our coach like it or not. Would not have been my choice and not especially happy about the choice, but my only option is support him and hope for the best. Go tigers.

Judging from his last 11 years in college coaching, I wouldn't make that guarantee so quickly.

His road in coaching is a lot tougher than Josh's. Josh had CUSA to help his record. Tubby will not.

So, it's gonna be ugly?

Dang man...seems like that's what will truly make you happy- to see him fail. We get that you don't like the hire but give it a freakin rest and give the guy a chance. At least wait until he actually loses a game before bashing him. Weren't you the dude who left the board until JP was fired? If so, go crawl back into your box. This is a time to be optimistic you frickin miserable.

I think I heard "Servant Leader" somewhere in there. +2
As mentioned before, I like that he has a proven system that works.

The stumbles in his speech were probably more due to lack of sleep than anything. I'm sure he has a lot on his mind to wrap up.

What does that even mean?

So he lost the presser? Who won it? Jarvis? Doc? Bowen? Rudd?
