Kruger had a 127-44 (.743) record over his last 5 seasons at UNLV. I don't quite see the comparison to this mess:

Tubby Smith, last 11 seasons as a head coach
214-156 (.578) overall record [19-14 average record]
82-112 (.423) regular season conference record
10-11 conference tournament record
NCAA appearances: 6 (3-6 record)
NIT appearances: 2 (4-2 record)
Points per game average: 68.9

For the jobs Tubby was at those past 11 seasons are pretty damn good

I would compare it to the Josh Pastner hire at GT. Fans can hope.

Tubby will be turning 65. How is it similar?

At Minnesota and Texas Tech. Calling those two "afterthoughts" doesn't even begin to describe the awfulness of those jobs.

I see Tubby more as a Bruce Webber. Universally known as a great x/o guy. Respected as a person. Has had high level success at P5 and Non-P5 schools but seems to have lost the shine he had 10 years ago. Recruiting always an issue.

What coach of the YEAR award did CJP win, and what counter offer did Memphis make to keep him? Oh I remember here is 1.5 million to LEAVE, bad comparison!!!01-wingedeagle

Tubby was forced out at Kentucky (like Josh) and fired at Minnesota for not meeting expectations, not advancing past the first weekend in the tourney and multiple players transferring (like Josh). It's very similar to what GT got. More people are on board with the hire today which is great and we could have done worse.

Outside of Buzz/Marshall, who from the other candidates we heard have a better resume?

Going 127-44 here in Vegas is a great accomplishment. THAT is the kind of record you look from a coach you want at Memphis. UNLV is a small...small university with pretty good recruiting, access to one of the best prep schools in all the nation (Findlay). Memphis is obviously better. If you can win at UNLV you can do a lot better at Memphis.

There has to be at least 10 other schools like UNLV in this country and we couldn't find a coach at one without an AARP card who has had a winning record over the last 4 seasons?

RE: Similar to Lon Kruger hire at OU
Tubby will do well here. Winning at Minnesota and Texas Tech isn't easy to do and he did it.

He took over programs that were in bad spots when he got there. He is a great floor coach and he is well respected.

People are mad we didn't get the guy they wanted or that the administration and boosters weren't willing to take a chance on another young coach.

Forbes isn't as proven.
The Gregg Marshall situation is what it is.
Williams is 31-37 at Virginia Tech and for his whole career is 8-5 in the NCAA Tournament. He hasn't set the world on fire there.

So keep spitting useless agenda stats regarding Tubby's last 11 seasons if you want too. Most aren't buying your bull.

Give the man a chance to at least make something happen. See who the staff is. See if he can get some of the solid grad transfers. See if he can save Moore. See what the team looks like on the court. See what his first couple of recruiting classes look like.

He has a lot going for him as the head coach of Memphis. It will be a lot easier for him to win here than it was at his last 2 jobs. Recruiting will be easier as well. He's been through the battles, he's tested, he knows how to coach and he knows how to win.

His HOF resume' speaks for itself. He has a lot of work to do, to fix the disaster we were left with. The cupboard isn't bare and a coach that can put our players in the best position to win and use them properly is a great start.

I hope he gets 3-4 or more players on board this season so we can have a full team and be ready to make a little noise. I'm not gonna knock the man because he was at bad jobs prior to this. He won at places that typically don't win...

I wanted someone else originally too but it didn't happen. I'm gonna give him the chance he deserves, he's earned that respect from me with his overall body of work.

RE: Similar to Lon Kruger hire at OU
For those of you who don't understand the definitions of the words similar and identical.

1. Kruger was 58 and Smith is 65 when hired. Neither spring chickens.
2. Kruger previously head coached at 5 different universities. Same for Smith.
3. Kruger took 4 schools to the Big Dance before being hired. Smith has taken five schools to the Big Dance.
4. Kruger had a .611 career winning percentage before OU. Smith's winning percentage is .669.
5. Kruger was 18 years removed from his Final Four run when hired by OU. Smith is 20 years removed from his last Elite Eight run.
6. Kruger got knocked out in the round of 64 the year before OU hired him. Smith was just knocked out in the round of 64.
7. Kruger went to the Big Dance 13 out of 21 years while at K-State, Florida, Illinois and UNLV. Smith went to the Big Dance 18 out of 25 years while at Tulsa, UGA, Kentucky, Minnesota and Tech.
8. Both are considered to be one of the "nice guys" in college basketball.
9. The OU fan base wasn't really wowed by the Kruger hire. Similar reaction from Memphis fan base.

You are right about the OU fans' reaction to Kruger. Analysts loved the hire at the time. OU fans love Kruger now. Who did Kruger replace....that's right Capel. Capel was terrible at OU though the initial reaction to his hiring was very positive among the fanbase.
