...when has Memphis hired a "name" coach?

Cal was a perfect storm of him wanting to get back into coaching, he still had $$$ from the Nets contract, and RC gave him whatever he wanted.

Forbes was my #3 choice after Marshall & Buzz.

If we really did do what was necessary for Marshall & Buzz and got turned down, so be it. I just don't want to hear later that we brought a knife to a gun fight with those two, and could have had one or the other.

Stop. I would have been satisfied with any of the other candidates that have been mentioned over Tubby. Hell, I would have taken Kennedy. This hire is a complete head-scratcher.

If nothing else, Tech's message board fanbase is not happy to see him go. Yeah, I know the bar there is really low, but they feel that he had brought them back from doormat to respectability.

It's the sort of hire a directionless school like Texas tech makes. Over the hill, name coach to make a splash. He's not going to be here for terribly long, max, what, 6 years? He's not on the upswing? He doesn't have any particularly innovative ideas, and he has a noticeable weakness (recruiting). I think we all think he's a very good x&o coach but I don't see how that makes up for the drawbacks. The person to hire needs to be younger and someone you could envision here for 10-15 years, for an era.
