INDIANAPOLIS – The Indiana All-Stars beat Kentucky (this time 106-84) in its annual boy’s basketball series for the 15th straight time and 23rd in past 24 contests, so the outcome wasn’t much of a surprise.
Indiana Mr. Basketball Kyle Guy (Lawrence Central) showed the ability to score (14 points) and distribute the basketball (a game-best seven assists), so that didn’t catch anyone off guard. However, for the largest crowd to witness the series at Bankers Life Fieldhouse (6,851 fans) in a decade, there were some “pleasant surprises,” as Indiana coach Stacy Meyer referred to them.
Coming into the week, every Hoosier prep basketball fan knew of Guy’s exploits, but when it came to Gary 21st Century Charter School guard Eugene German, even his coach wasn’t completely aware of how talented the Northern Illinois recruit was until after his high school season.
“I had a chance to watch him on film,” Meyer said, “but I had a chance to watch him at the Top 60 Workout and it just took that one time to know how good he is with the basketball in his hands.”
German was difficult to contain as he helped 21st Century win 20 games this past season, he proved tough to guard in a pair of exhibition games against a heralded Junior All-Star squad and in Saturday’s win over Kentucky, and it was simply more of the same.
German scored 15 points as his team built a 20-point halftime lead and ultimately finished with 20 points to earn the game’s Most Valuable Player Award.
“It may have been a secret,” Meyer said of German’s ability, “but I doubt it is anymore.”
