North Dakota to drop baseball, men's golf
http://www.grandforksherald.com/sports/4...-mens-golf

This brings WAC baseball down to nine teams at the end of the season, possibly eight depending on what happens with Chicago State.

That sucks for them...I hate seeing schools drop baseball and wrestling...
Cheers!

That sucks for them. Both are hard sports to sponsor so far north.

That puts Big Sky Men's Golf down to 7 (5 BSC schools plus Hartford and Binghampton as affiliates)

UND cuts baseball and men's golf
The state mandated 5% cuts across the board, so warm weather sports were cut that have no hope to be competitive (other than beating USC this year in baseball).

This makes it easier to go FBS with Title IX. 05-stirthepot

Reduces our sport count to 19 from 21.

Baseball is in the WAC and men's golf is a non-required Big Sky sport.

As said in another thread, makes it easier from a Title IX perspective to go FBS. 05-stirthepot

Still have 19 sports and baseball and men's golf were minima.scholarships sports for us..

But they keep women's hockey? Really? I'm sure it costs more than the $600,000+ baseball does. Women's Hockey? I know it's the north, but come on. Title IX has made a mess of college athletics!

Title IX was a big part, but weather just isn't conducive to spring baseball up north. The baseball team had its first home series against Seattle last weekend, and that was a 40 degree weather.

Baseball - 605 k budget, 5 scholarships
Women's hockey - 1.3 m budget, 18 scholarships much of that endowed

Baseball - play 2 miles off campus at a municipal ballpark
Women's hockey - play on campus at a world class arena

Baseball - had the home run derby winner last year and two players were drafted
W hockey - has Olympian athletes, including USA, Canada, and Euros

Baseball - "crowds" of 300
W hockey - averages over 1000, 3000 attendance has been hit against Minnesota

Baseball - WAC opponents like Chicago St, UVU, and UTRGV
W hockey - WCHA opponents like Minny, Wisconsin, Ohio St

Baseball - perennial bottom dwellers in a weak league, made the DII World Series once
W hockey - ranked in the top ten, hasn't gotten over the hump on conference playoffs vs perennial powers Mn, WI

There were no plans to rebuild a baseball stadium on campus. That would have been very expensive considering more parking ramps would have to be built to replace parking lots.

NDSU has a nice minor league baseball stadium on its campus, so it recruits better than we can.

If we were in the Summit, it wouldn't have been on the chopping block. But the Big Sky doesn't have baseball, so it was cut.

Baseball was operated as a vestige of our time in DII. It did not conform to the desire of being competitive nationally or at least competitive in conference. The statewide budget cuts of 4% gave the athletic department an opportunity it could not pass up. Surprised it took so long to cut it.

This leaves Title IX room for FBS or potentially for men's lacrosse.

Golf is a growing sport. It's a real shame they cut that.

Most of the stellar golfers in the area get scholarships down south.

We offered 1.5 golf scholarships for seven athletes. Total budget was just around 110k.

With 19 sports total now after cutting two, that is more than most FCS schools.

Are there a lot of high quality courses in ND?

There is an Arnold Palmer course near UND. Some great courses in the state, but they have short seasons. But I don't live there now and not a golfer.

Cool

I figured the weather would be a limitation.

The consensus with the Fargo media is that these sports were cut to help fund FCOA and not "because of a budget cut." It's a bummer either way but let's at least be honest. Is swimming and diving next? I don't know much about the sport but they are orphaned as well aren't they? However, UND might need those sports to stick around on the women's side if they do go FBS.

And NDSU doesn't have a plan yet, as their students rejected a fee hike. NDSU can't cut anything women's as they are already short in Title IX. Wrestling is out of the question as that is a Big12 affiliate now.

With our interim President that was a former governor, he has the politics down and is a strategic thinker. Your President has a knack of royally pissing off Bismarck and the legislature.

No, swimming and diving won't be touched.

Not my President, just reporting what I hear. Looks like they were right though.
