That's an acceptable record. Anything less won't cut it.

They had an outside the lines on that program. The theory is that they had an unfair advantage because they were for profit.

I don't think it's necessarily an unfair advantage, but it is gross that a unaccredited institution is competing as a DI program.

We have to have a coach that Memphis people know to put butts in the seat NOW. Dan might turn out to be a great coach but he would not draw fans.

Then maybe we should hire Donald Trump as coach. He is filling arenas all over America.

We could get him cheap. As president he would only be making $400K a year. We could easily double that.

This is the guy I've been trumpeting for some time. Tremendous upsides, which were noted. The University would obviously have to dig deeper into philosophy and so forth, but I watched "Thunder Dan" play his final two years at Central Michigan, and he was one of the most-beloved players that program has seen because he played so hard. I would love to see him instill some of that grit to the Tigers. He's at least worth a look.

RE: Dan Majerle (since we seem to be doing this)
Penny would either be a home run or a complete disaster; and history points more to disaster. I think it would be a short sighted and burdensome hire by the university and an unnecessary rescue attempt of a program by a guy we'd rather keep on a pedestal than throw darts after a 30 point loss to UCONN.

Memphis doesn't need Coach Penny to sell tickets. The program just needs to win consequential games. It needs to be relevant. Josh's teams were never relevant, so the team stopped becoming relevant to fans. Honestly, the message coming from the university over most of Josh's tenure has been...

1. Football is all that matters
2. Basketball is now flying coach
3. We're lucky to have Josh

If the school is so apathetic about the sole generator of revenue for the athletic department, is it then any wonder the fans followed their lead?

That being said, there are no quick fixes and Penny would only temporarily sell tickets. If he lost, we'd be in a worse place than we are now. The school should go find an experienced coach worthy of the program and worthy of the fans who pay the money that supports the department. He doesn't have to be a big name, but he does have to be a true leader and he does have to be a proven winner.

He would build one hell of a wall around the city...and make Ole Miss pay for it.

if we're looking out West...hire a winner from the Pitino coaching tree in Marvin Menzies...this looks like it may be his 5th straight NCAA tourney at NMSU, and potentially 6th in 7 seasons.

he has somehow kept NMSU relevant in the WAC...most impressive (he hasn't won an NCAA game, but all he's got are underrated HS kids and JuCos)

We just need a competent coach. Our fans will be back. They know when something is geniune and when they are being fed a bunch of bs.

I think he's a good coach - strange that he hasn't gotten a bigger offer yet - as you alluded to - a former Pitino assistant winning with spare parts rosters in New Mexico.

My only concern is that aside from the 2 years at Louisville, his entire coaching existence is out west.

RE: Dan Majerle (since we seem to be doing this)
Louisville's Rick Pitino is the biggest name linked to the job, and hope remains at UNLV of being able to land him. Pitino's season ends March 5 because Louisville has penalized itself from participating in the postseason because of a sex scandal.

One source said he expected UNLV to have a decision soon on the next coach, and if that is indeed the case, it would bode well for luring Pitino because he would be available sooner than most candidates.

But UNLV also isn't in the planning stages for a news conference to introduce Pitino as its next coach. Pitino figures to come with a lot of demands that would have to be met, but he also would change the complexion of the program overnight.

Names that also have been linked to the UNLV job include New Mexico State's Marvin Menzies, Long Beach State's Dan Monson and Grand Canyon's Dan Majerle. Jessup also is interested in Arizona associate head coach Joe Pasternack, and Rebels assistant Stacey Augmon has been vocal in his interest in the position.
