RE: Greg Marshall
He's holding out for a top 10 job in one of the power conferences. Memphis offers neither.

That's a ridiculous absolute statement and even if the odds are slim there is nothing wrong with throwing everything you have at him.

case closed

We may HAVE thrown everything we had at him, it wouldn't have mattered. He was never accepting this job. Period.
LOL... ok dude...01-wingedeagle

If you're one of the people that thought Marshall was a possibility here, I don't know what to tell you. I applaud your optimism, but you were deluding yourself. It was literally never going to happen, he's got his sights set on a bigger gig.

RE: Greg Marshall
I would have liked to take a better swing at Marshall, but don't mind missing, he was a long shot. I would be very interested to learn how aggressively they pursued Buzz. I know the contract he has at Tech has the same dumb lack of a buyout or offset clause like Pastner's, but he was making an average yearly salary of $2.6 there. I would have liked to see us go after him hard, say hey we'll give you an average salary of 3.0 to 3.2, but you have to meet us in the middle on a buyout/offset. I mean hell, if reports are true and we paid Tubby over 3, then why the hell couldn't we have gotten Buzz at 3.2?

What's important is that we have another thread on it when it's been discussed ad nauseam in other threads, and, on top of that, with just his name as the title.

RE: Greg Marshall
Memphis was never going to offer the Pastner-like buyout that Marshall has a Wichita State. I doubt they even made a hard run at him because they were not going to put themselves in the same situation they were just in.

That being said, I bet Tubby makes a deeper NCAA tournament run in his tenure here at Memphis than Marshall will in his remaining years at Wichita.

It's easy to spend other people's money, isn't it? I'm sure they have millions of reasons for the hire they made.

Not true. It was well underway. Both sides didn't see eye to eye

Exactly, just don't understand this continued nonsense. Memphis makes a very good hire - and Tubby IS the hire, with JP gone. This is a time to celebrate. Apparently impossible to make this crowd happy.

We'll see. Tubby will have access to some elite talent coming out of the city over the next 3-4 years, while Marshall will have to make due with under the radar kids. In the end, well-coached, highly talented teams usually last longer in the tournament.

Memphis has had a long run of elite talent, and gotten to the Championship game, while Wichita State got to the Final Four. Baker was a walk-on, and VanVleet was one no one heard much about until after he signed. They were surrounded by high level talent and have been on a great run the past 7 years. But each time a group of Seniors has moved on after a litte success, the assumption has been we would take a step backwards.

What you will see next year is the most elite talent WSU has put on the floor under Marshall yet, amd if they sell out for him, watch out.
