Rolling Stone article claims Urban Meyer might have covered up A Hernandez incidents

Probably just click-bait-hype. Lots of CYA wording like "might have" and "alleged."

Quote:In college his coach (then-University of Florida head coach Urban Meyer) may have helped cover up failed drug tests, along with two violent incidents — an assault and a drive-by shootout outside a local bar.

ESPN already covered something that Urban may have already turned a blind eye when Hernandez did something bad. It would not surprise me that coaches cover things up just so that their team wins. I think the NCAA is already investigating him for recruiting violations at Florida.

Isn't that the same rag that ran with the UVA rape story without proof? Yeah, I lot of built up credibility for that "news source".

Right, Hernandez's well documented character issues only popped up after he played at Florida. Before that, he was an angel. And there is no way that the head football coach could've possibly known that his superstar tight end was a complete lunatic.

If you really stop and think about it, Urban Meyer is the real victim here.

First thing I was thinking.

But looking the other way isn't that uncommon for coaches.

Old news and not the only head coach who has done this type of stuff.

RE: Rolling Stone article claims Urban Meyer might have covered up A Hernandez incidents
That is definitely true. It's not like everyone thought Urban Meyer was some great guy before this. Everyone already knew that he is a flaming a-hole.

That's huge part of what makes the Meyer/Harbaugh thing so interesting. You just have to world-class hyper competitive jackasses going at it. It's fun to watch from afar but from where I sit neither one is as likable as a porcupine.

Also, Meyer's not the only a-hole coach in college football. A lot of coaches would've done the exact same thing as he pretty clearly did. They would have buried their head in the sand and hoped that it went away - just as he did (at a minimum).

I don't care about Urban Meyer. He's a great coach and he's done a great job everywhere he has been, including his current stop in Columbus.

My point is that Aaron Hernandez didn't wake up one day and decide to suddenly become a train wreck. The overwhelming likelihood is that he was a mess going back to his childhood and lots of his would be mentors let him down by not being more firm with him and almost certainly covering up for his many indiscretions/crimes.

That's how you get to that point of dysfunction - none of the mentors in your life have the courage or character to put a stop to it before it grows into a full-fledged cancer.

Honestly, as a Nebraska fan, you have to see the parallels between that situation and the Lawrence Phillips/Tom Osborne situation. I'm sure Osborne had the best of intentions but he let Phillip stay and refused to discipline him and allowed the talented but deeply troubled running back to spin further and further out of control because Phillips was very good and Osborne was under a tremendous amount of pressure to win. So, you do what a lot of guys do. You bury your head in the sand and pray that it all works out.

I am sure that those guys followed that exact same approach with many troubled athletes over the years. Also, it probably worked out for the coaches in most instances. Their troubled players either found Jesus and stayed in line or waited until they were no longer associated with the program to commit their serious crimes.

However, in the cases of Phillips and Hernandez, it did not work out. Some people ended up injured, others ended up dead. However, it wasn't your brother or sister or mother or daughter that was injured/murdered so it's all good.

Haters gonna hate, right?

Breaking news. That story ran in August 2013. Here's the full version:

There were reports that Hernandez was getting into trouble in High school. There were signs before, during and after being at Florida that gave off warnings about his character.
