RE: Time to love another coach until you hate him.
I think this conversation has some germs of truth. But, people generally love the HC... until they don't. It's not uncommon in college athletics.
I guess where I differ is that I tend to understand more and more that it is a strong, but likely temporary relationship.
I actually didn't like Cal when he was here, started to really like him (obviously for a HC, wins really equal the love) and then when he left it was a gut punch. I was awfully sore about it, primarily b/c while I understand UK is a better job than almost anywhere, I didn't like the damned arrogance of their fanbase and being told to hire Cal's guy (TB) or 'else'.
Still, that was 7 years ago. I won't say I love Cal now, but I get it. And frankly, he made the right decision. There are between 5-20 jobs better than Memphis, and UK is in the '5' part of that list (undeniably a better job). Plus, if he had stayed, we were all going down in the NCAA's eyes. By leaving and 'splitting the evidence' he actually did us a bit of a (self serving) favor, b/c if Cal/Memphis were still a pair, the Rose sanctions would have been more ugly.
So, I don't love Cal, probably never did, still find him a little irritating on TV, but respect him as a coach, think he made the right decision, and strongly assume once we get some real success again, that Cal will be happy memory. We just need some comparable happy memories to properly put his tenure in good context.
Larry? I loved Larry, who doesn't? He was Memphis hoops and a living legend.
Pastner? Screw it, I like the guy. A lot. I think he's intelligent, kind, and hard working. I have little respect for how he started lashing out at the end, but I'll chalk that up to stress and the knowledge that he gave what he could and it wasn't enough. I make no apologies for either liking him or wishing him well. And I firmly believe that if he learns from his errors here, he could potentially be hell on wheels.
Having said the above, in all cases, you still love the program and the city and the kids over the coach, even if you also love them as well. My honest admiration for parts of Pastner's tenure never could overshadow the question of what is better for the program. Once it became apparent it wasn't going to happen for him here, it was time to make a change.
Program > Coach.
If you remember that, you'll probably be happy most of the time.
