Buckley was a 3 yr UT student who also graduated and was a mature presence. Taylor is a mature influence as an older player. The good transfers in are great. They give a kid a year to grow up and not worry about playing time just practice well, be a good teammate, develop your skills. Those guys have to watch games for a year so they practice w an edge and push guys. The next season they come into the program hungry. Coach K has lost (or pushed along?) most of the weaker and less focused players who have come through the program under his and coach hhsssss recruiting. interestingly coach k's first graduate was a joplin recruit, anyijong, who may be the only player in school history to have played for 3 coaches since the 40s when there was some coaching turnover after the great harold anderson left.

Doing Spring cleaning I came across an old basketball poster featuring Jake Barnett, Justin, Mo Lo, Ian Salter and Larry Bastfield. If the "Baby Backs" poster was the best ever this is surely the worst. I have enormous respect for Justin for roughing out four years after giving us one of the most thrilling moments in UT history in the new Savage debut.

Since I really don't follow UT basketball that much - who is Justin?

All I could think of was Justin Hall - and I'm sure that's not who you are talking about. Left after 1998 and was at Toledo for 2 years. I believe he ended up at Schoocraft College after going down to Hampton - or something like that.

LOL. You admit you don't follow UT basketball, yet you love to give your opinion on the state of team. That's priceless.

LOL? That's Priceless and makes you laugh out loud?? Get a freaking life. I sure as hell can't name every player that is named Justin, but I can watch them play and see how pathetic they look. I also do it because I know how much it bothers you. I know I can count on you to come running to Coach K's defense. I don't understand the man crush you have on him - but it's Priceless....LOL

Maybe too fine a point but they haven't looked pathetic since K's first year. Perhaps for moments but overall it's been mediocre at worst, awesome at best. And by the way Moto, you made two rookie mistakes- you paid attention to MB&G and even worse, you used Kowalczyk's name and the word "defense" in the same sentence. 03-wink

The reason that some of us defend Coach K so much is because we have an appreciation for how he has taken the program from the bottom of college basketball (on and off the court), to MAC title contention, strong academics, and good citizenship. As someone who follows UT men's basketball very closely, I know how awful it was during the Cross years, which gives me a greater appreciation for how Coach K has improved the program. I feel thankful that Coach K has made being a UT men's basketball fan enjoyable again.

If K gets the benefit of being measured against Cross for the rest of eternity, then K will be in the NCAA coaching hall of fame (except that there probably is no such thing).

Speaking of transfers. Loyola Chicago women's team has a problem.

I concur. We had become a basketball wasteland, and that was not going to get any better under Cross. At least now fans like me expect/require us to be in contention for a MAC title. That's a hell of a lot better place than being one of the worst teams in D-I. So yes, I give Coach K a bit of a grading curve. However, by the time he's been here 10 seasons, his progress with the program will need to be re-evaluated one way or the other.

REVISIONIST HISTORY IS AMAZING ... Toledo was a consistent winner for years under Joplin - In a one-bid league that is amazing. Only had one losing season, his last one. Then got the heave-ho.

That's who TK should be compared to, and if that is the case right now he is tied at best, and perhaps even a clear No. 2. Cross is on O'Brien. If he knew he was going to can Joplin (and there were rumbling for several seasons even when successful) OB should have had is coach in waiting, as well as a Plan B. If Cross was that guy, or the Plan B, then shame on him.

To some TK has the program back to where Jop had it. The bar now is extended MAC Tournament Championship runs like Miami, Kent, Ball State, Akron and now Buffalo are putting up, with a NCAA Tournament bid on occasion.

If not that ... then it was a waste of time to fire Jop.

Jops brought in and oversaw the players that did damage to UT. It was no waste to fire Stan.

I was a huge Joplin supporter and I was very upset when he was fired. I agree that Coach K has brought the program back to where it was under Joplin.

It wasn't Stan Joplin's "X's & O's" or his "W's & L's" that cost him his job so much as it was his misfortune to be head coach during the "point shaving" affair which put the Athletic Department in a defensive posture and in order to try to prevent the NCAA from coming down hard on the program Mike O'Brien took a proactive approach and got rid of Stutz and Joplin in order to try to deflect any serious NCAA penalties-----and in that regard he was fairly successful, although hiring Cross probably damaged the program as much as anything the NCAA would have likely done.

RE: So How Many Transfers has Coach K Had?
The staff and university didn't commit any violations. A couple of veteran criminals convinced some college kids to give them info and in a couple of unproven but possible cases shave some points off big wins. Most of those guys graduated school and settled w the huge federal investigation for very minor convictions. Not good but not evidence of a program out of control. O'Brien was looking to get rid of Stan well before the case broke. Stan's issue was that his generally good teams weren't generally bringing a lot of fans into Savage. The Blade, the students, the casual fans weren't very supportive of the program. To be fair the marketing department sucked, Savage was in need of renovation, the program budget was tight and Stan the second half of his tenure without much contract security. If you look at Stan's era overall, the team was usually solid and the players usually graduated and stayed out of trouble, but the program nver quite peaked and the last season was kind of a mess clouded by the gambling investigation. The blame for the shortcomings should be spread around. The thing that sits bad w those of us who knew Stan is he never got a chance like coach k to have full school support, a nice arena and contract security to try and make an NCAA run.

RE: So How Many Transfers has Coach K Had?
I think that you underestimate the degree of responsibility to which an institution is held. I don't think that the violations were up to a "lack of institutional control" level, but the NCAA probably could have invoked a "failure to monitor" which also has repercussions and can carry penalties. I had the sense that it Stutz , not so much Stan, that ran a "pretty loose ship" when it came to team discipline and control, but by getting rid of both of them (as both had players involved) the institution pretty well deflected any NCAA action.

If O'Brien was looking to get rid of Stan before the scandal as you indicated, then of course the scandal gave him the excuse he needed to do so. After all Stan had won the regular season MACC the year before. The problem with Stan's teams was the same problem that TK's teams have------they started out strong but faded at season's end---they never played their best ball in February or March.

Stan definitely didn't get the Institutional support or the facility improvement/maintenance that would have benefitted the program

Stan's team did beat #14 Michigan State on the road. It would be nice if K would get one signature win.

And as everybody knows by now Stan also beat Ohio State, Xavier and Dayton in a single week. Ohio State made into the Final Four that year. Stan had a number of good teams but somehow they never could get over the hump in March-------but he certainly is not the only one to have had this particular problem at UT.

Stan had some setbacks with his recruiting toward the very end, but I still fully believe that if the gambling scandal had not occurred, Stan would have still been the Rockets Head Coach when UT met UMass in the newly renovated Savage Hall.
