A win is a win is a win, even when a bit ugly. Yet another game when relievers not named Otto or Myers can find the strike zone. I sort I was reliving the nightmare of the ULaLa regional first game melt down when Ditman and Orewiler walked away a 4-run 9th inning lead. I'm pretty sure if The OG had another viable option out of the pen Dup never would have come out to start he 8th inning, as it was quite clear he ran out of gas in the 7th inning. At least the offense-- for once, giving Big Jon some run support-- and defense came to play tonight.
Game Ball #1: Jon Duplantier (W, 2-3, 7.0 IP, 5 hits, 2 runs, 7 BBs, 2 HBP, 7 Ks)-- in a game when he didn't have his best stuff and was struggling mightily with his command, he managed to perservere and give us 7 strong innings.
Game Ball #2: Dane Myers (1-4, RBI; Save #3, 1.2 IP, 0 hits, 0 runs, 0 BB, 2 Ks)-- came into the game with just one out in the 8th inning, bases loaded, 2 runs already in (on 4 BBs and a ground single) and the tying run coming up to the plate, and promptly pounded the strike zone and closed the door.
Game Ball #3: I could have given it to Ford Proctor (2-4, double, run, RBI) or Hunter Kopycinski (1-2, 2 BBs, run), but I'm giving it to Dane Wunderlich (2-4, HR#2, run, RBI).
One down, two to go. We caught a break with Charlotte taking a game from FAU; now we need to take advantage of that. Offense really had a good game tonight-- in addition to the 12 hits, many of which were line shots, we hit another 3 - 4 line drive outs. Our achilles heel right now is our bullpen depth beyond Otto and Myers. The OG keeps giving the others (Jefferies, Solecitto, Esquivel, Kravetz, Orewiler) an opportunity to step up-- and he will no doubt continue to do so, but up to now, save for only 2 - 3 quality appearances, none of them have shown that they can throw strikes consistently. Tomorrow another 2 - 3 will get another chance to prove themselves in relief of Blake Fox (as Otto is unlikely to be available before Sunday). Solecitto came oh so close today-- getting the big strikeout and then a ground ball (which unfortunately found the hole), but then with the help of a suddenly pinching umpire he couldn't find the strikezone. Job opening-- middle reliever/set-up man with the only qualification being the ability to pound the strike zone. Anyone?
Let's keep the bats hot tomorrow afternoon, and give Blake some early run support. Just win, baby! Go Owls!
