The NCAA has shut down satellite camps, effective immediately, with a ruling Friday by the Division I Council that requires FBS programs to conduct all clinics at school facilities or facilities regularly used for practice or competition.

Satellite camps rose to prominence over the past year as several programs, notably Michigan and others from the Big Ten, conducted camps in the South and regions rich in recruiting prospects.

The ruling Friday is effectively a win for the the SEC and ACC, which had banned their coaches from working camps at destinations outside a 50-mile radius from their schools.

Alabama coach Nick Saban spoke out against satellite camps this week in advance of the council's ruling, saying the proliferation of satellite camps could lead to dozens of camps annually in heavily populated cities.

"It sounds like a pretty ridiculous circumstance for me for something that nobody can really determine [if] it have any value anyway," Saban told AL.com

The issue landed in the crosshairs of the Division I Football Oversight Committee as part of that group's comprehensive review of recruiting issues. The oversight committee, chaired by Big 12 commissioner Bob Bowlsby, last year formed a subcommittee to review camps and clinics.

The subcommittee investigated the need for legislation to address the growing divide over satellite camps and was to report its findings before the council reached a decision.

Harbaugh could make things really difficult and uncomfortable for the NCAA if he wanted to. Will he? Doubtful, but it would be hilarious.

I'm sure he and every other coach has already found a way around this or an even better option for themselves.

What this says more than anything? A bunch of SEC and ACC teams are scared sh*tless of Jim Harbaugh and Urban Meyer too.

If it were beyond 50 miles, I'm sure FC Cincinnati would pay for a new practice facility.

Quite a few angry HS coaches and prospects on twitter right now. Not surprising. Many prospects can't afford to travel across the country for each school and are losing a valuable opportunity to gain interest from college programs.

What happens to the major camps like SMSB?

Not surprising that the AAC, MAC and C-USA were in favor of these events. They benefit a lot by traveling to major camps where there's tons of "lesser" prospects. No idea what the Sun Belt and MWC are thinking. Pretty stupid of them, actually.

We don't run camps or clinics out there. Plus we use it every year, so t the argument could be made that it is a regular practice facility even if we did.

While I'm on the topic of how stupid the NCAA is, why can't they start allowing prospects to take official visits earlier in the process (read: spring/summer)? Hell, let them make a few more too.

Edit: As we saw today, the NCAA clearly doesn't care about the prospects and their families, so the above is merely wishing thinking.

Should be 10 official visits anytime after their Sophomore year. Heck, that is even arbitrary because kids are being offered so early now.

Leach lost me at "student athlete." He's been on the game long enough to know the interests of the P5 and their media partners will always outweigh the interests of athletes. If there was money to be made there wouldn't be an issue.

Larry Scott confirmed that 11 of the 12 Pac-12 schools did not support a satellite camp ban. Would not say the 12th, but, now you can guess.

Ok, so now if the ban has been lifted and Tubs was for it, how is UC going to make it work to their advantage? Our we going to hold a satellite camp in Florida, Georgia or Texas?
