I don't bash GP, I find him entertaining. But his ego can be annoying.

He actually did not say "he had been contacted" by 4 of the 5, but he sure would love us to have that impression. I would bet my house that if he has had contact, the coaches or, more likely, their agents, are only responding to GP's texts or emails.

But GP wants us to think that Buzz and Gregg Marshall value his opinion above all others, and immediately reached out to him for advice on their careers.

What did he say then? I could have heard it wrong.

Hey JhanJo, I'm not criticizing you. But I've listened to GP for years, and GP is also careful to phrase things to imply he has more power/input than I think he actually does.

Like today, GP said something like this in response to Vernon - I'll put it this way, I woke up this morning, and I had heard from 4 of the 5 top coaches on anybody's list for Memphis. GP is implying that they are reaching out to him - and I call total BS on this. GP is the reporter, he is wearing out the phone lines of anyone he knows.
And if he gets any response, even something innocuous like "Wow, crazy what's going on down there in Memphis" from Buzz, GP acts like Buzz is reaching out to him for career advice.

Like I said, GP knows Josh - who probably communicates more than any other coach - better than Buzz or Marshall, but he didn't have a flipping clue that Josh was taking the GTech job today.

I bet you are wrong.

Don't think so Midtown.

Think about it - why would Gregg Marshall confide in GP? Marshall would want to keep his interest in Memphis, if he has any, as quiet as possible for as long as possible. But GP is constantly implying that all these coaches - Izzo, Buzz, Marshall - come to him for career advice.

So why did Jeff Goodman say the same thing on Calkins this morning?

A number of coaches have their guys reach out to the media to get people mentioning their names to improve their present situations.

Cause he and Parrish talk all the time? Parrish is Goodman's source.

I am more than willing to drop this - today is too great a day to argue with fellow Tiger fans.

My point is GP uses anonymous quotes and inferences to exaggerate his influence. And if you listen carefully, GP phrases these contacts the same way every time.

All these guys - Goodman, Borzello, GP - "break" news within about a minute of each other on twitter. Follow all of them and see for yourself.

if you read what GP said, those who 'contacted' him didn't really express interest in the job, but maybe were just asking about the 'change'. A chance to leverage their contracts.

RE: Parrish 4 out of 5
Getting into semantics here, but I was listening to GP and he said he woke up this morning with texts from 2 coaches. And he has texted with 4 of the 5.

So it sounds like he reached out to 2 of them, and 2 reached out to him. I'd assume Forbes is one of the 2 to reach out to GP. He'd be the thirstiest of the group.

Also, we're assuming his list. While I'd agree with the consensus here of who the 5 are based on GP's description, GP could have talked to any 4 coaches and said they are 4 of the 5 most mentioned candidates.

Agreed that coaches sometimes use reporters to get their names out there to leverage their contracts.

Totally disagree that Gregg Marshall or Buzz were the ones who contacted GP today. GP is working the phones, trying to break a story. Gregg Marshall could probably give a flip about what GP thinks he knows. GP has admitted in the past that he has spoken to Bowen exactly once in his life.
