Is Pastner really going to go to the University and threaten to STAY if they don't supplement his contract. I've heard of coaches threatening to leave if they didn't get more money, but to threaten to STAY? Now that's funny. And I don't know if I would consider that leverage. I can hear it now.
Pastner: Your going to supplement my contract or else.
Memphis: Or else what?
Pastner: Or else I'm going to stay and coach here.
Memphis: Noooooooo!!! We'll pay we'll pay.

Why is he entitled to make what he was making here? GT will dictate his worth. Memphis shouldn't pay him a dime.

If we want him gone we will have to. He is not going to take a pay cut to leave. He still has 4 years on contract with Memphis that owes over $10 million. He is not going to walk away to a job that is offering maybe $6 million over 4 years. That time frame is plenty of time to blow up a second school and be just as undesirable as he would be leaving Memphis, the difference being the $4+ million he left on the table when he walked from Memphis... That is not happening.

I'm not there, so I don't know how legit the talk about JP going to GT is.

But if he does, he outsmarted our "leaders".

Now, all the available coaches are locked up or have taken new jobs.

Well played.

The university should agree to supplement his salary but only if they can say they fired him.

I think Josh wants out, and I don't think he would nuke the GT deal if we held our ground, the question is though, do you risk it? If it were me, I'd offer him something, maybe 200K / year or a lump sum of 600K; but I wouldn't offer more than 500K / year.

I think there is merit to just calling his bluff and telling him that he is the coach of the Tigers until he resigns.

John Martin says someone very close to Marshall has told him if we offer 3.8 to 4 million, Marshall is ours.

I don't think we'll offer that much doe.

I think that would be the "home-run" hire, but I doubt after getting blamed for the crazy Pastner contract that he will eager to jump into another big money contract.

Contractually I don't see how the school owes him money if he leaves. However, I'm thinkin' he was asked to explore "opportunities" that the school would help offset. Wouldn't surprise me if Bowen went to Tech and told them he'd pay them money to take him.

Not even to mention the perception that a good basketball program brings can't be given a dollar value.

If he left 100% on his own we would not owe him anything. That is not the case. JP was not leaving Memphis for GT and taking a $1+ million per year pay cut. Both parties realized the best solution for everyone was for JP to get a new job. Thus, JP searches and Memphis agrees to supplement some of the difference in pay. Both parties win and everyone but GT fans are happy!

For someone like Gregg Marshall, you have to consider it. Then again, I'm not writing the checks.
