If this was your garden variety snitching, thirty years ago is a long time. Pearl recklessly tried to ruin this kid.

He NEVER "tried" (let alone succeeded) in ruining Deon Thomas.

Thomas went on to a fine career at Illinois.

Additionally, Pearl was instructed BY HIS AD to record the conversation and that AD actually provided Pearl with the recording device.

Pearl believed correctly that such an offer, if it had been made, violated NCAA regulations. Fred Mims, Associate Athletic Director at Iowa and the NCAA compliance officer on campus, gave Pearl a tape recorder with a telephone attachment and told the coach to document Thomas' statements. Between April and July 1989, Pearl made at least ten calls to Thomas or to Thomas' friends or relatives. During these conversations Thomas discussed the various perks, including cash, which had been offered to him and other recruits by the University of Illinois. According to Pearl's affidavit, Pearl played the tapes for just two individuals other than his superiors at Iowa: an NCAA enforcement officer, as he was required to do upon request under NCAA rules, and a University of Illinois attorney.

How would his AD even know? Heck, he won't even talk to his Auburn AD.

Pearl is a really good coach. And a good recruiter too. He's just a bad cheater.

I know many don't want to talk ethics or morals here. But what kind of person tattles to his AD and agrees to a phone recorder, then baits a kid into talking? What kind of person then goes on to employ same "questionable" recruiting tactics that he just ratted out? And what kind of coach tries so hard to cover-up a minor violation like a BBQ, that he pressures the recruit's family and coaches into lying as well? He even made an announcement at the cookout telling everyone that they were committing a violation.

I mean, it takes a special kind of person...

Everybody cheats. He just got caught. He's a good family man.

ha. Talk to his ex-wife.

Garden variety cheating he did at Tennessee, it's wrong but it's not especially damning to his character.

What he did at Iowa? Completely unforgivable and there is a reason he was persona non grata in DI basketball for a very long time.

Not really sure what is "interesting" about it. Just an old thread that was revived that shows all the mopeheads who were claiming Pearl wouldn't have been successful at Memphis, so they tried to get an early hot take on Pearl at AU.

It has zip to do with Penny.

I think Pearl could have absolutely killed it here. I'm the last to doubt his actual coaching ability.

I just don't know if it's worth it.

Define 'It'. I think he would have killed our program. I can't imagine him knowing how to juggle the needs of Memphis without doing something really stupid and getting caught.

But at least he couldn't have done it with a backyard Barbecue.

KY just gave Cal a lifetime contract.

Cal is smarter than Pearl.

edit: But there are probably some new rules coming to College BB which might really change the landscape. I'm glad we are not mixed up with either of those slippery turdlike humans.

Beyond foolish. He'd be amazing here. The Memphis coach first and foremost has to be a Pearl/Calipari type endorser. Tubby was the farthest thing from that.

Who among us is an expert in predicting what the past might have been?

The possibility I put forth has just as much value as the one where he would have killed it in Memphis. Plus the idea he would have gotten caught cheating is based on his own past history.

None of us knows what he would have done. It’s foolish to be sure of either.
