As to the fixation on Duke's student body, the NJ thing is said a lot in NC, and particularly the Triangle. It's tribal. It's largely a way to say, whatever you have to recommend you, you're Not From Here. You're other, and, in your own way, geographically parochial.

And as a Southerner, I can say without hesitation that when one says that a person is "from New Jersey," it's code for "Watch him. He's under suspicion for boorishness and incivility."

As you know, Duke is a small school with students who come from everywhere, and, upon graduation, disperse worldwide. It will never have the broad local ties that Carolina, State and ECU have. There are advantages to both scenarios, but this is who Duke is.

However, as Tip O'Neill famously said, you're entitled to your own opinions, but not your own facts. Duke began as an almost-entirely Southern school, and has moved each year since about the mid-20th century to one with national ambitions, and a national student body. It has students from the northeast. It has never drawn the largest part of its student body from the northeast.

Not that there's anything wrong with the northeast - my daughter attended Wellesley College and I found Boston wonderful - but to say that Duke's students are or have ever been mostly from the northeast is false. In fact, the northeast has never outpaced the South as Duke's primary region of student enrollment. Nor has the Midwest or West, for that matter.

It seems a little silly to be debating this on a sports board, but it's annoying to see untruths repeated as gospel by fans of other schools.

Well said, and welcome to the board.

RE: Wallace Wade Stadium
It is definitely a dog whistle. It's a way of saying, "Yeah, well North Carolina may have priveleged, douchey fans/alums, but at least they are Southerners, so they're trustworthy and good people.

"The Duke fans/alums on the other hand are privileged and douchey but they are also mostly northerners, which means they are terrible human beings who cannot be trusted."

We all saw world class whacko Ted Cruz cynically prey upon that exact type of xenophobia when he criticized Donald Trump's "New York values."

It is absurd that people would still be that backwards in the year 2016 but clearly many remain stuck in the 60's...the 1860's.

Thanks for the replies and welcome!

Why don't I post something that's actually about the thread title??

A couple of renderings of the September 2016 finished product we are salivating for. Wallace Wade Stadium has always had good bones since it was carved out of a ravine, but when you were built in the late 1920s, it's time for an update.

(Still learning how images in posts work for this site, so forgive me if it's not right)...

Finished aerial shot of athletic campus:

We can only hope it sells out and maybe they will talk about bowling it in.

That looks really nice....thanks for sharing. Can't wait for a road trip to Duke.

BTW, what is the new capacity going to be? 35K?
