Rules impact this year
saw this:
http://kenpom.com/blog/index.php/weblog/...shot_clock

pretty darn interesting...
Three-point accuracy finished at 34.7%, the highest figure since 2008, which not coincidentally was the last season the 3-point line was at 19’ 9”. Two-point percentage finished at 48.7%. This is the highest since 2007, but that understates things. It’s actually a virtual tie with 2007 and from there you have to go to 1992 to find a better number. There were 71.6 points scored per 40 minutes of D-I on D-I action this season, the highest figure since the mid-90’s.

Nationally, turnovers were committed on 18.1 percent of possessions. That’s the lowest turnover rate in well, as far as we can go back. That would be 1993, the year that the NCAA started tracking turnovers nationwide.

There were 19.2 fouls per team per 40 minutes this season. That was a six percent increase form last season, but less than a two percent increase over 2003, the last season where average pace was at least 69 possessions per game. There will be more fouls called when there are more possessions, and once accounting for that, this season wasn’t terribly unusual, even with an emphasis on freedom of movement

pretty interesting...

I think the next big change will be after next year. I think it's almost a lock that we'll be going to quarters. I think we're going to see it tested in the NIT etc. next year, and then put in place for 2017-18.

So anything on the average length of time for the average game? Did they get shorter, longer or stay the same?

More importantly how long did the last 4 minutes take in actual minutes?

Any suggestions for reducing the # team timeouts in the last 4 minutes? I say the team only gets 1 timeout in last 4 minutes.

I attend alot of womens basketball games. While i dont like the changes there, It has sped the game up. 15 to 20 mins shorter.

haven't seen it. I'd guess it's gotten shorter. I mean the game on Monday night was over at like 11:28. That's 2:09 for the title game. That's not bad at all.

What about the number of shot clock violations? I predicted that they would go WAY up, since a 30 second violation was much more attainable than a 35 second violation, and thus defensively oriented coaches would emphasize them more as a goal.

I think the so called "unintentional fouling" that every one knows is intentional really detracts from the game.

It seems like it takes forever to play the last minute or two of the game. I suggest in the last two minutes of the game....when a team is fouled, they get the free shot and the ball out of bounds.

In my judgement a team should never expect to gain a benefit from committing a foul.

However, I doubt it will ever change.

I'd like it if the team that is fouled in that situation has an option. They can choose (on non-shooting fouls) to either (1) Shoot two free throws, or (2) Inbound the ball on the offensive side of midcourt with 10 seconds run off the game clock from the time of the foul.

You want to foul your way through the last minute when your team is behind? OK, but it will cost you 10 seconds every time you foul.

it's never going to change. And I don't think a majority of folks want it to change, as that would take all the interest out of the last minute of a game.

They ought to think about the old NBA rule-3 to make 2 if you are double bonus in the last two minutes.

The current foul-a-thon takes all the interest out of the last minute of most games.

You want to talk taking all the interest- taking away fouls the last minute would do just that. A team up by 6 points with a minute to go and the ball, and game is over.

A team up by 6 points with a minute to go and the ball, and game is usually over anyway.

The foul-a-thon takes the interest out of 2 point games.

Rules impact this year
1. Get rid of the fouls. Great suggestions above for several ways to do that. Clock should run normal speed or faster to get to 0:00.
2. But the games not over at 0:00. All games have an untimed (other than the shot clock) overtime. Whatever the leading team's score is at the end of regulation, we play until one team has two more points than that.

And with those two rule changes... No lead is truly safe and no game is totally over. Down by 12 with a minute left? Instead of fouling for the slimmest of slim chances.. Just play hard to the end and see if you can connect on four 3's in a row in OT. Way more exciting and upbeat.
