RE: Racist GAP advertisement?
"Why does the media take the comments of an insignificant minority of overly sensitive crazy people and further flame the sensitivities of our racially charged nation, by giving voice to nonsense like this? For these tweets to be made news-worthy makes it easier to understand why we're dealing with the Donald Trumps of the world." - black man in HuffPo article comments section

RE: Racist GAP advertisement?
Looks like the black and white girl in the add are sisters lol. An actress is the mother, I guess she adopted 1.

Many on social media took issue with the way the Lucy Dinknesh Lubensky, 9, was made to stand as a "prop" for an older-looking white girl, whose arm rests on Lucy's head. But Lucy's mother, actress Brooke Smith (you might remember her from Grey's Anatomy and Silence of the Lambs), wants everyone to "calm down" about the issue. Apparently, Lucy is Smith's adopted daughter and the girl resting her arm on her head is her sister, Fanny.

I don't see anything racist about that advertisement. Do you?

And how does it differ from the one run this year?

1. It's in black and white

2. No one seems to be doing physical activity

3. One girl is not in a different color than the rest.

Just for starters.

1. So color photo's racist, black and white not so much.
2. Physical activity is racist, sedentary poses are not
3. There is on AA in each picture. So having a few Asians makes this one less racist.

Leave the parody tolling to greenwave, you suck at it.

Who said anything about those things being racist or not. I simply said those were some of the differences in the two advertisements.

RE: Racist GAP advertisement?
I've done some past work in the advertising area. More on the numbers side of thing, but I got familiar with how these things go, maybe not directly but more tangentially.

The photographers running these shoots, and pretty much all the helping hands on the set, are full-on socially liberal. The corporate suits aren't down there telling the girls what to do.

The whole thing was a non starter to begin with, but the existence of an identical ad (tall girl with arm resting on head) with the races reversed should've laid this to rest. No one cared about the pink shirt, it was the "arm rest" thing that got race card warriors riled up.

Utter bollocks.

Why would anyone deliberately create a "racist" ad that would likely get themselves fired simply to case fake outrage?

Unless I'm misinterpreting your question, it sounds like we agree here?

The chance the ad was created with racist intent, subtle or otherwise, is so ridiculously low.

Who said anything about those things being racist or not. I simply said those were some of the differences in the two advertisements.

You also said of the first photo

"The black girl is symbolically under the white girl."
" I think the perception is that the black girl is under the one white girl and the other girls are talented enough to do some gymnastics but apparently the black girl isn't. "

And you asked stupid leading questions like

* "Why do you think they chose one black girl and three white girls?"
* "Why do you think they chose to have white girls doing something acrobatic and not the black girl?"
* "Why do you think the black girl is under the arm of the white girl and not the other way around?"
* "Why is the black girl wearing pink where as the white girls are all wearing blue?"
* "Do you think all of these things happened on purpose or by coincidence?"
* "Or rather, do you think it was done consciously or subconsciously?"

Of the second, which is remarkably similar to the first

"don't see anything racist about that advertisement."

you keep playing word games... Nobody said the add was deliberately racist. What has been said is that it was a racist product, whether or not it was intended.

Yes. Perhaps I mixed your post up with someone else's. I was referring to someone's ridiculous notion that this was done on purpose for 15 min. of fame.

I thought the 15 minutes of fame comment was not about the adds creator but about the people who are making a stink about the poster.

Perhaps it is both. I'm more inclined to believe that someone did this subconsciously rather than deliberately and while their intent was not to be racist, it certainly upset enough people for GAP to have to apologize for it.

Did *WHAT* subconsciously.. There is nothing racist, in any way, about the add..

I have trouble taking you seriously...

Nothing in the ad is racist, at all. As *proven* by the fact all of the supposed elements happened last year with the roles reversed.

The only racism here are people perceiving racism where none exists.

If that's you, might want to check that.

RE: Racist GAP advertisement?
There are gobs of fashion ads featuring multiple ethnicities of models and multiple poses, including the "resting arm on head" which was already done with a white girl being the armrest.

It was only a matter of time before some configuration would be interpreted through some moronic racist lens. You see what you want to see.

We can't dig into people's minds, but I highly doubt there was even some sub-conscious racial element. She was short, the girls were adopted sisters, the same arm rest pose has been done before, fashion model photographers tend to be socially liberal... In a court of law, the evidence would be overwhelming.
