vs 9 SMU won by 1 37-36
vs 5 UNLV won by 14 62-48
vs 10 Dayton won by 12 61-49
Vs 1 Kentucky won by 13 53-40
vs 2 Houston won by 9 84-75
so won 5 games by 39 points. Even if you give then a 50 point margin in a 1/16 game, that would be 89 points in 6 games. And that's with 1,2,5,9,10. Nova had 1,1,2,3,7.

I'd be curious(regardless of the GOAT status) if any team had a better run in the tourney- combining both point spread and opponents.

If you are talking greatest tournament run, that is a different argument than greatest team.

84 had Houston, Georgetown and Kentucky. Houston had Olajuwon and Young as 1st round draft picks. Kentucky had Bowie, Turpin and Walker. Georgetown had Ewing + a couple of 2nd rounders, Bill Martin and Wingate.

Hey!!! Why are you slighting my Louisville Cardinals in 82??? 05-stirthepot01-lauramac2

Lost to Georgetown in Final Four 50-46. Rodney McCray, Scooter McCray, Derek Smith, Jerry Eaves, Lancaster Gordon, Charles Jones, Milt Wagner ... all played in the NBA ...

But in all seriousness .. the college game in the 80's is really hard to beat. It was rare to see players jump early to the NBA, so when they did it, they were truly special. Ewing played 4 years. So did Olajuwon. So did Ralph Sampson. It's ridiculous to think about ...

Today's game pales in comparison to that decade.

Louisville made the Final Four in 3 out of 4 years in 80, 82, and 83 (plus mid 70's, 86, etc). In 81, they probably would've made it too, except their early-round opponent hit a 50 foot heave shot as time expired (U.S. Reed of Arkansas). If not for Reed's shot, it couldve been 4 straight F4's and 5 of 6. That Arkansas game in New England was televised on grainy, fuzzy UHF, maybe Channel 25 in Boston. Much better picture nowadays in HD.
