Think the most recent numbers are in this report done for the return of football... I know the stadium decision has been made but it still bothers me to know about the subsidy cap and the lost stadium revenue. Hoping that donations continue at current levels or above once the 5 year pledges are complete, So the caps dont necessitate cuts again.http://ftpcontent4.worldnow.com/wbrc/PDF/UABFinalReport.pdf

Maybe that money will go toward actual construction at the soccer "stadium."

Amen. At least bathrooms and a concession stand, after playing the sport for almost 40 years (1979). Stuff that's standard at every decent soccer complex in the Birmingham area.

The desire of UAB to be a player on the national D1 / FBS athletic stage, even at the "midmajor level", means maintaining an annual athletic budget in at least the lower tens of million dollars range, not just for a particular building project that when completed the checkbook can be put away.

Every few years a relatively modest budget team like Villanova, Gonzaga or Butler upsets the big guy's apple cart, but such a happy confluence of under rated players and coaches doesn't happen often enough to make the exception into the rule.

You do realize there are somewhere in the neighborhood of 350 college basketball teams, right? Most teams pay 6 figures.

And Villanova gonzaga and butler do not have modest budgets. They have different budgets because they are basketball schools. Also, the fact that you lumped Villanova in with the other two shows how little you actually know about college basketball. Villanova isn't some no name program that came up out of nowhere.

They are doing fundraising for the remainder of the soccer stadium. It will be complete with restrooms concessions etc. The old bleachers will be utilized for the other side of the stadium from the new bleachers giving seating on two sides. It will be really nice. Patience.

That "decision" came at a time when we just killed football, so it was obvious that we weren't truly committed to improving basketball or at least we (Watts and company) were ignorantly thinking we could use more money on basketball to build it up since we eliminated the football expense (which was no expense at all).

But I agree with your point. We will need to step things up in basketball coaching salary in a few years (maybe next year). Some NCAA Tournaments units would help. Also, some added ticket sales would help!

I better conference would really help - like the AAC with Memphis, Cincy, and UConn.
