While Ayn Rand has a lot of good points about her writings wrt ideas/predictions on gov't overreach, I do not buy into her philosophy of Objectivism. The "Who is John Galt" narrative was a brilliant observation on her part though.

that 'speech' in Atlas Shrugged was ridiculous...after a few pages I thought 'this has to be a joke'...I only made it about half way before I couldn't take anymore.

Eh, not the best book ever, but definitely worth the read. It comes up so much that it's good to know what the heck folks are talking about.

The book became the go-to talking point for any right-of-center college kid who wanted to try to make themselves out to be an intellectual.

The CEO "required" all of in the company's management program to read the book. This was a past company. Actually, it wasn't required but highly recommended as he would ask you about the book if he happened to see and talk to you.

Never mind that only the Bible has sold more copies than this book. I would not however argue that is is long winded. She could have cut it in half and accomplished her points.

RE: Lone Ayn Rand fan protests at a Bernie Sanders rally
As I've said before, I've always thought that the key to Rand is to not take her work too literally. Don’t think about politics, economics, and morality, instead appreciate her celebration of excellence and the courage to take responsibility for your own actions. Yes, her characters are unrealistic, her social theories can be questionable, and her writing style is iffy, but people who criticize her work on those grounds miss the point. Rand's work should be read as allegory, like Aesop's fables. They're completely exaggerated. The characters are infallible in a way that no real humans are, but that's ok. They're motivating. Rand implores you to be a maker and not a taker, and reminds you that hard work occurs before the paycheck instead of the other way around. She says to be proud of your work, you can accomplish greatness, personal excellence is the highest aim, some people want you to fail but f them, and to honor those who you love.

well said. i've always told people (people who've never read her books) that the book is apolitical, it's latching on to the human inside you. or at least how to properly behave in the age of industry. but don't you she wanted you to take her word for word, southern fried baptist biblical?

I agree with the premises above that Rand should be read as allegory, and that the true value is in her appeal to the masses to celebrate the builder and not the taker. However, Rand herself did not view her works as allegories but a "new" philosophical system that she called Objectivism. Rand was a utopian who wanted to see the world reshaped in her values, i.e. everything has a price - even within the dynamics of relationships.

agree. i meant to say i think she wanted her philosophy to call people's mind into action. but she was more heart than mind, i feel. i think she cared so much about humanity that she didn't want to see anyone in poverty

I liked the sign that said, "we 'deserve' other peoples money." THAT is a lot of cajones. I guess he thinks that because he doesn't have any of his own. No one has told him that you have to work to get your own. And if someone did inform him of this he probably said, "no way I'm going to work. My parents have brought me up up to this point it's total strangers turn to do so".
The next generation, a whole bunch of young communists that don't know history.

If it wasn't an audiobook I never would have gotten through AS. I got what she was saying but it took way too long to say it.
