This article is kinda long, but a pretty interesting read. The writer says he works in media and that TV is going to demand a lot of changes as it puts more money into college football including 4 16-team major conferences and an 8-team playoff. It also predicts that some current P5 schools will end up in G5 conferences and vice versa, based mostly on the size of the television markets they play in. It's a good offseason read anyway.

Here is the flaw in this article. The 1978 reconstitution and level breakout of college football was based on several factors not related to television i.e. number of programs the university offered, scholarships, etc. driven by the NCAA and not ESPN and the rest of the media that have contrived this bogus line of thinking that teams within noncontract conferences somehow don't belong at the highest levels of college football based on market size or conference affiliation.

I will admit that maybe that a new division of college football between Division FBS and FCS is possible and to some degrees makes sense, the NCAA still has to set parameters as it did in 1978, and I'd like to see the NCAA try bump a school out of an existing conference by using perceived television market value or lack thereof as a justification. Contract Conferences might have a stranglehold on letting others into the club, but it will be interesting as hell to see them try to kick someone out, in order to get to 4 x 14 or 16 team conferences.
