If USM were to be located in Biloxi, Ms
USM located in Hattiesburg vs USM located in Biloxi !

Where and what different impact the University would be in today if the location would have been at the Gulf Coast instead of the Burg ? Enrollment, Academics and Athletics ?

Any thoughts ?

Things would be different for sure. However, no one could exactly say. Hurricane Katrina would have had a larger impact on the university than it already had. I think the footprint in the pine belt would not be as strong, and there would be heavier competition on the coast from surrounding schools for students. I believe the city of Biloxi would support Southern a lot more than the city of Hattiesburg currently does (tax dollars from the casinos). However, the media market would be in a lot better place on the coast versus Hattiesburg.

There's a lot of speculation variables in that question, however I think that without a doubt a university on the Mississippi Gulf Coast would be extremely more successful than a university in Hattiesburg.

Fun Fact: The University of Mississippi almost was located in Mississippi City (present day Gulfport)

Really ? I had no idea about the Ole Miss fun fact, but I did hear from a Mississippi State alum and huge fan that MSU was actually suppose to be located in McComb. At the time there were 3 possible destinations, McComb, Starkville, and I can't remember the other..but, something didn't work out in McComb so they decided Starkville. But he said that McComb was the very 1st option and it was chosen.

If either of those Universities would have been located in either Gulfport or Mccomb, there would not be a University of Southern Mississippi, I'm afraid .

That's funny, because Starkville is really just McComb with a college.

I'd say USM would probably be in the AAC if we were located in Biloxi. Probably be a lot larger enrollment wise too, even though we do get the majority of students down there.

Haha, Yep..you're exactly right, the only difference between Mccomb and Starkville is a University.

I think you are right, USM would be more attractive to students being on the Gulf Coast for enrollment and also more attractive to other athletic Conferences (AAC) or maybe even more...who knows ?

Money helps everything theoretically, so I figure USM would be a bit stronger in all OP's specifics.

Similar question to yours is what would Tech be like if it was located in Shreveport/Bossier?

Well, there would probably be ten less LSU fans on the coast.

If that many. The coast or little italy as it was once known has been over run by refugees from new orleans. Its so bad that on an average summer weekend you must have ******* replant as far east as orange beach LA.

Well, we must remember that back in the ole days when the universities were established that the Northern counties had the most population thus more than 2/3 of the senators and reps in the state legislature. Of course, as one would expect, the northern part of the state placed Ole Ms and Ms State in that area for their convenience. Dont know the actual vote regarding Ms State but Oxford won out over Miss City (gulf coast) by ONE vote. Dont overlook the fact that USM nolw operates a full four year degree granting university on the coast in Long Beach in addition to the Gulf Coast Reserch Lab around Ocean Springs which houses our marine sciences and research vessels. We werent placed there originally but moved in on our own therefore dominate the entire South Ms college scene. I think the only difference had USM been located there in the first place would be that Hattiesburg today would have only maybe one traffic light.

make it Gulfport, since it's the bigger city...you guys would probably be in the AAC if USM was in the Gulfport/Biloxi TV DMA, and had a little bigger budget.

and it would be a regular landing spot for the AAC basketball tourney.

Well our side of this market argument is the inconstancy of what is a market and what isn't "on message boards".
When you read articles about the possibility of uconn to the b12 they mention how much of the north east market they bring. Yet when a school some fans want to keep out is discussed the market is only the city the school is located in.

Our former Ad openly said our market was Hattiesburg, the Jackson ms area and the gulf coast. We have a large number of alum living in those areas. In the case of the coast we own 2 campuses and also use space at the nasa facility in Hancock county. That goes back to another magical word "research" in which we have a long history with nasa.

If you look at our "market" in a way consistent of other schools our Market is the size of Nola.

In the end if the truth ever comes out you will find that market has played zero part in why or why not we are in the aac. Its more the combination of an ad who basically propped his feet up after facility expansion was finished and a few schools with losing records to us who didn't want us in.

Metro Conference tourney was in Biloxi in 1990 if memory serves. Louisville defeated USM in the final.

Also 1994. Forget who won but I was at the VCU school paper and saw them lose to Virginia Tech in the first round.

RE: If USM were to be located in Biloxi, Ms
I've asked this question numerous times, but in a different light. I ask people, who are in the Hattiesburg area but don't really "cheer" for USM...I always ask those people, "what do you think Hattiesburg would be like if USM was located in a different city?" And they usually think for a second and say, "There would be nothing here."...And honestly, it would pretty much be old retired people and thugs, with a lot less restaurants/hotels/shopping.

USM has done more for Hattiesburg than any other business/institution in this area.
