RE: USM's Homecoming opponent next fall....
^Oh, I hope it does get picked up...just looking at recent history in which ALL national broadcasts (conference games) were on weekdays with no additional pickups as the season progressed. The new contract could contain language guaranteeing dates and platforms...remains to be seen.

ETA: I guess I'm just surprised as I figured that one would be moved for TV after listening to the USM AD...sounded like he thought so too.

I don't think this is intended as disrespect for Marshall as much as getting a quality opponent for Homecoming to attract more fans. Look at the other conference teams we host in the "Homecoming" area. No one will care about those.

To me I would think the Marshall game itself would draw a good crowd because of Marshall's history and name. I would've thought we would've picked one of the other games to keep attendance high throughout the season. Homecoming games are usually one of the better attended games so why not pick one of the other opponents to help get attendace up for that game??? Contradicting myself though, I do like the idea of picking a premier game as homecoming though to add to the excitement of the weekend festivities

one would think that....until one remembers the crowd at last year's game....tad over half filled butts in the seats.....

oh yeah, I will be talking this one up as she approaches (assuming Hop and corp don't screw it up)

History aside I meant lol I know you guys played longer, and sucks more to lose the series. Looks like you guys owned them most years.

My reason for posting that was that you are correct in your statement about ECU not being above either of us. I have lots of respect for ECU, just like I do Marshall. ECU actually won 4 of the last 5 USM/ECU series, so it was really a lopsided series before that. Even so, they were all hard fought games. Just like USM knows when it plays the Herd, get ready for some hard nosed football, ECU was the same way. I feel that LaTech/USM has fit the mold of the ECU,Marshall/USM games now.

Completely agree, actually I feel Holtz has turned LT into the new ECU for the conference. I wished Marshall played those guys annually and hope the conference keeps USM and MU as a crossover, or if we lose anyone that they bring you back to the east, though I am sure that won't happen..

would not argue that point....much respect for all, but Tech is closest AND history....I'm seriously pulling for UAB to make a 'splash' in return....

and we owe you guys a black eye 03-wink

IMO. I don't really think this is a lack of respect thing Southern Miss scheduled Marshall for Homecoming Cato's last year. The Alumni Association and Athletics Department take into account the calendar and what would be the most appropriate and feasible date to have a night game for a homecoming game. And this is just how the schedule fell. I don't really enjo having some of these schools schedule cupcake games for homecoming. This will be a good, competitive game that will be as close to a rivalry as we currently have.

I like the idea of Marshall being the Homecoming game. More excitement. It's not at all a lack of respect. It will be a hard fought game between projected contenders of the CUSA title. No disrespect at all, and plus Marshall administration..I'm sure..had to agree with the game on that date also.

XACLY! ....very smart...we ain't scared....never have been....

if one really thinks about southern miss heritage, it's respect to MU being the 'why'....

I hope USM fans haven't put in your head that we don't respect Marshall.

I always thought of ECU as being our proper "sibling." Really, though, in terms of school resources, an impoverished state, and what we've managed to do despite those obstacles, Marshall is a far more apt comparison.

I just wish that you guys had been in C-USA in the 90's when both programs were at their peaks. How fun would it have been to see Pennington and Moss go up against our 1997 defense. Or your 1999 team against our loaded 99 defense. Basically any late 90's-early 00's Marshall offense against a late 90's-early 00's USM defense.

Sorry to jump into this thread so late but it would have been fun to have the Tech teams of the late 90's also playing against USM and Marshall. We had some really solid teams back then too.

I just want to say it's nice to see southern miss fans be the 'fans' of the game and respect the whole....

that's what I miss about college football in today's world....

I am not surprised to see this. Southern Miss hosted Marshall in their 2012 and 2014 homecoming games. Those were Marshall's last two visits to Hattiesburg. USM is not a pushover anymore, so I am expecting a competitive game.

The 2014 game is still stuck in my mind. We jump out to a 14-0 lead 5 minutes or so into the game and then Marshall goes on a 63-3 or so run and wins 63-17 I believe

Should be a great game. USM is my pick to win the league this year. Gonna be tough on the Herd to pull one out in Hattiesburg this fall.

Its really the only logical date. We play at home on Oct 1 which is too early. We are on the road 2 straight weeks with an open date thrown in.

I don't know of any Marshall fans who have taken this as a sign of disrespect... And if they have, then shame shame everybody knows your name...

As a previous poster stated... We were the HC opponent in 2012 and 2014... So who care is we are in 2016??? Either way, we have to win.

It's a long-standing tradition. I saw a ton of homecoming ceremonies when I attended most of Rice's away games when I attended (1966-70).

That has not been a problem for the Herd against my Eagles lately.

Entirely different team and attitude....Entirely different season, my friend... This should be a out and out dogfight.
