By his measure, I pay for hospitals I will never use for a variety of reasons. I pay to educate doctors whom I will never see. I pay for equipment that will never be used for me. Oddly, this is true of everyone in this country. It's how this country works. As for PPO/HMO. You COULD get a PPO, but you'd have to pay for it. The government won't. Obamacare won't. And that is PRECISELY the plan of Obamacare, to move away from PPOs and to HMOs to control costs. It's also going to bundled payments where the hospitals get a 'flat fee' to take care of you, no matter how much care you need. What do you think THAT leads to Tom, when you need $1mm in care and they've only been paid $10,000 to care for you?
I can buy gas at my corner store... or I can travel a few miles and save some money. Same for food and clothes and cars and everything else. SOMEBODY lives right next to that place... but I'm not jealous of them.
I don't know what part of Houston you live in, but you need to stop acting as if there is only one hospital system near you. Methodist, Hermann, St Luke's, Christus etc. Every one of them takes SOME PPO. If they don't take yours, it's because yours doesn't cover their costs. Maybe you should talk to the people who mandate the charges for those things. It's not insurers, as you well know. They'd LOVE to charge you more, even if that meant they had to pay a little more.
You can't get a PPO in Houston if you have Diabetes and work for yourself. Methodist, MD Anderson Public Taxpayer Owned Hospital, etc. do not take ANY HMO.
The real reason is that the Medical execs are looting the system. And the GOP in Texas is allowing BCBS and everyone else to loot their reserves to pay themselves 200 million in compensation a year.
You didn't build that hospital. The taxpayers did.

I get it. Some of y'all expect to recieve millions in free assistance from the taxpayers then pretend that you did it all yourselves.

Why do you think that is, Tom? As an aside, you're wrong. They don't participate in 'marketplace' HMOs.
Having said that, call them and work it out in advance. They MUST take you for Emergency care, and will be happy to take from you (and your insurer) what they take from other insurers. The problem is, your marketplace HMO is trying to artificially force down prices.

Continually ignoring that they lost $1byn on policies like yours. I find it telling that you lament them earning money while ignoring that you're not paying it.

Technically, they only built a portion of it. Very few (none I'm aware of) hospitals are entirely taxpayer built/funded.

and some of YOU want to receive millions in free assistance from the taxpayers to cover your healthcare and then pretend that your premium covers it.

I don't care that Tom is a 'taker' from the system. By definition, lots of people are...
What bothers me is that he is perfectly comfortable with being among 100+ millions takers, while chastising anyone else who 'takes' anything.
You (those who have marketplace PPOs or are takers from the system) aren't covering the cost of your care. You didn't PAY for that. The hypocrisy is deafening
