Okay. Not sure if this is a slam dunk hire.

RE: Saint Louis hires Ford
I love the hire for the Billikens. Ford is a proven winner and a proven recruiter. He knows the Atlantic-10 and Midwest very well.
This is a telling move by Saint Louis. They want to be a consistent competitor in basketball in the A-10, and I'd say they are trying to position themselves for a future invite to the Big East. If Ford gets them into the tournament consistently, an invitation will surely follow in the next few years.

Yuck. Never a fan of hiring a guy who just got fired.
Aside from Amaker at Harvard, when has it ever worked out well?

Why is Saint Louis in the A-10 and not the MVC? Yeah, yeah, it's a step down in competition but still...

So Saint Louis just sent out a release: "Saint Louis University has not hired a men's basketball coach. The process is ongoing."

SLU is in the A-10 and not the MVC because the A-10 offered them a spot when they got tossed from CUSA for not having a football team.
SLU would rather play in the A-10 than the MVC. They'd rather play in the Big East than the A-10.

Yeah, I was being rhetorical. It still makes geographic sense and at the time they left C-USA, it certainly made competitive sense with SIU, Creighton and Northern Iowa all being Tournament regulars. In SLU's first A-10 year, 6 Valley teams were legitimately on the bubble.
But as I said, I understand.

They want to be in an East Coast conference for student recruitment and general exposure purposes. The MVC would have welcomed SLU when they left CUSA. If they ever want to join the MVC all they have to do is pick up the phone. That won't happen because they don't want to be in a Midwestern conference.

I went to graduate school in St Louis (at Wash U) and lived there for two years. St Louis as a city doesn't look to the Midwest except Chicago. It looks East, East, East. SLU is no different.
SLU in the A-10 was starting to make real sense when Butler, Xavier, and Dayton were in the conference. But now, they're not really hurting anyone other than their travel budget by being in the A-10. I see no crisis resulting from them being in the conference. They want to stay...fine. They want to go...we understand.

SLU thinks they are better than the MVC. Be interesting to see if the Big East took Dayton and Richmond what they would do.

The A-10 was looking to be an east/mid-west conference. It had Dayton, Xavier then added Butler. Unfortunately for SLU both of those latter schools left for the Big East and it looks like the A-10 is abandoning it's mid-west branch and will not shed tears if SLU is plucked away from them.

I think that we feel that St Louis provides value to the conference. But the conference will 'understand' if they feel a more regional conference is a better fit for them.
What the A-10 appears to be really saying is "don't ask us to take any Midwest schools".
---
The real fear is that the A-10 takes a bunch of schools to build a bridge to them and then have SLU leave for the Big East. I'm personally not opposed to Valpo and Wichita State joining. The problem is that we don't have any room for any teams at this point.
SLU's value to the Big East really hurts them. Not enough value to get a bid, but just enough to make the A-10 leery of expanding towards them.

I always thought that SLU wanted to differentiate themselves from the MVC.
It's the same reason that Marshall left the MAC, and Louisiana Tech left the Sun Belt. It's not so much that C-USA is head-and-shoulders "better," it's that it's NOT the MAC/Sun Belt.
