Keep it on topic
This is my suggestion toward making The Parliament a more civil place for all fans of Rice.

Just keep your posts on-topic of the thread in which you're posting.

There has been a long tradition of threads veering way off-topic. Many times it turns into a fun, serendipitous journey. But many other times it turns a civil discussion of sport into an angry battle about something unrelated to the thread title.

I've been guilty many times for making off topic comments in threads. But I think under the circumstances that not taking threads off topic would improve this forum tremendously.

Have the discussions that we want to have, but move them to new or existing threads where they can be read by those who wish to participate (and skipped by those who have no interest or would only get frustrated by it)

If I were moderator I would attempt to set this as policy and move comments as needed. But I understand that it's not that simple to do on this platform. So I ask two things:
Do you agree that this should be a "rule" of Parliament (whether written or unwritten)?
If so, are you willing to self-enforce with your own posts?

Great idea. I'll do my best to regulate myself as well, as I've also been guilty of veering off-topic. Too many of these discussions go places they aren't intended to go.

No. It is an impossible rule to enforce. Suppose a thread is started about tight ends, and somebody wanders over to line play, and then somebody points out the game plan, are we off topic, or should all posts not about tight ends be deleted?

I see most of these threads as conversations, and conversations wander. I wish we could have more of these conversations face to face. Maybe it would be more civil then, and less likely to turn into a "less filling - tastes great" war.

As for self-enforcing, most of my posts that end up involved in nasty exchanges start with me responding to something inane or inaccurate that someone else has said. I don't start threads here very often. I self enforce now by not exercising my right to express an opinion. I am choosing to not engage the element that fights with me. Of course, this takes a certain amount of self control, and occasionally I lapse. My diet analogy is very apt. I notice the slurs as much as I notice the Maple glazed donuts on the table, and in my case, the road to self control is best served by staying out of the house of temptation. Unfortunately, this is also the house of information. I have tried staying away 100%, and have tried clicking on only "safe" topics, but eventually the jelly donut beckons too strongly. But if my comments would received civilly and not immediately cast aside as being from a Bailiff defender(not so much) who is OK with mediocrity(not at all), maybe then we could have a real discussion. This board has become polarized, and NOT between the fire Bailiff and keep him factions. I belong to neither.

We used to have parliament get-togethers on game weekends. Do those still happen? If not, why not? I tried the tail gate route, but was made to feel unwelcome. I still have my parliament shirt, but it gathers dust in my closet. We used to be united. Now we are divided.

This place is no longer fun to visit, nor do I feel a part of the community. Makes withdrawing back into the solitude in which I followed Rice athletics the latter 35 years of the twentieth century easy to withdraw into.

I see I am slipping back into the dangerous practice of expressing my thoughts here. Time to get out of this neighborhood. Maye I can find donuts in a nicer place.

Maybe a "less filling - tastes great" forum could be established and those who want to engage in such discussion could be free to do so there. I notice something similar was done recently when the Time for a Change thread was moved to the Rice Smack forum.

It only works if everyone does it. As you mentioned, too many times someone has to get snarky and disrespectful, so we feel compelled to respond. It gets personal. It's hard to "turn the other cheek," but that's what it takes. There's a certain poster here who I have to let be an a$$. It's the way he is. It's hard not to respond, but I have to take the high road or it goes on and on and on, and it ruins the board.

I know. It's very frustrating, but every sports message board on Earth is dominated by fans who are delusional and out of touch with reality. Ours is no different.

Really good questions.

My thoughts:

Consensus what you have after the majority silences the minority.

Reality? Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. so is ugliness, incompetence, stupidity, etc.

Delusional? always the other guy, especially if he disagrees with you.

Damn, it's been fun guys, but time to get back on my diet.

It's like the rule of driving:
Anyone going slower than me is a moron.

I like the signature of a poster on Pony Fans:
"Sports discussion boards - the killing fields of intellectual discussion" or words to that effect

Or is this off topic?

What are you saying there is an objective standard? You have a inanity meter we should all use? Did you get it at Radio Shack or build it yourself?

See my post above for how we view the actions of others.

I think this post is the platonic ideal of just pulling someone's chain. OO is a great poster even when I don't agree with him I like to read his comments.

My point is that a couple of posters who complain the most about the deteriorating tone and/or repetitive arguments are among the biggest contributors.
