I wonder how the tone of conversation would change if people were required to post under their real names?

Ha! I raised the same question recently. More along the honor code example.

This board would die.

Great idea!
The number of participants would certainly go down, but perhaps not below a critical mass. And the quality of posts would certainly go up.

How would this be verified? How would you know my name wasn't John Smith?

Great point George. It would remove quite a bit of slander as well as expose the trolls. -Charles

First, let me remind everyone that there is a specific forum to 'bash' the coaches. You could always follow the rules and go there if that is your intent. Of course, lots would say they're just stating 'the facts'...

This. I have frequently reminded people that the Rice community is a relatively small one and most of us know each other.... so even heated conversations and disagreements USED TO BE relatively civil. Over the last year or so, we've had an increasing number of people who are purposefully hiding their identity or even posting under multiple aliases, sometimes with completely opposite positions on an issue...

Hambone10 isn't my name, but it IS my relatively well known (by most on here) nickname and my number. If you want to know who I really am, a lot of people could tell you. I just don't necessarily want 'opponent_lurker' knowing my name... as this isn't a 'private' board.

Wavering off topic is actually one of my favorite parts of this board... as in we've now gone off to Movie quotes...

Having said that, I think a lot of people are simply hiding behind internet IDs to cause trouble and run off those of us who value the camaraderie on here.

This is a place for supporters of Rice. We don't have to agree on 'what that looks like', but it also isn't some place where official policy is made. Those who THINK they're doing 'someone' a favor by running off dissenting opinions from theirs need to remember that they're running off Rice supporters.

And with that, I'm back to my self-imposed silence

As Ethan said to Martin: "Don't call me Uncle. I ain't your Uncle...Don't need to call me Sir either, or Grandpa or Methuselah. I can whup you to a frazzle...name's Ethan."

RE: Keep it on topic
I'll chime in as I find the name concept to be an interesting one. I've considered several times saying my name, years at Rice, sharing giving amounts, etc. Ive had all of the above thrown at me multiple times during threads or in private messages and have wondered if sharing any of that would matter. I realize though that in doing that I'm simply succumbing to bullying.

My hypothesis is if we were forced to say "our real names" the instigation would not decrease but rather the derogatory response to the initial "instigative" comments would be what declines. I say this because several people on this board are not only given respect because of their name and inside information but often it's so expected some posters actually command that respect or even fight harder for that then they argue their point. This of course in turn leads to more instigation, the cycle proves more vicious and everyone is worse off.

So while I understand the theory that people should behave in less instigative manner if there name was known, I think it's unfortunately not the case. Some of the most aggressive and instigative posts are made by those who proudly say they're name and use it as clout. Beyond that, Ill stand by the ideal that my comments should be taken as they are whether I'm an "insider" or just some schmuck who happened upon these boards when a few of his old college friends brought this place up during a passing conversation.

My suggestion is if someone is instigating or if you don't care what I think because I don't have season tickets or my name on a scholarship, then ignore the posts. The trolls will get bored and go away. If you think it's nice some new people are joining the boards and there is a chance to engage new fans, or simply that it's a positive that anyone actually cares what is going on in Rice Athletics enough to post on a message board about it, then reply back in a conversational tone that welcomes fresh perspective. Maybe then some of these people will actually want you to know who they are and the cycle can reverse for the better.

Just my two cents.

RE: Keep it on topic
I stayed away from this for a few days, and am fascinated by the turn the discussion has taken.

I think real names, pen names, nom de guerres, aliases, it doesn't matter. what matters is the content of the post and the manner of presentation.

For example, I know Walt and he knows me. We mostly agree on baseball threads and disagree on football threads, but we each speak our minds.

Some of the others, I don't know, and I don't care if you post as Jim Bob McReady or LivingLaVidaLocaOwl. It is the content of your post and the manner in which you present it that matters. Knowing your real name makes no difference, especially if I graduated 10 years before you were born.

But, no, I won't use my real name. For one thing, the name I go by is not the name on my birth certificate, so which one should I be required to use? But also, on another forum, I had somebody use my real name to delve into my personal affairs and maliciously cause me trouble, and I will not expose myself again to that possibility, even for my anonymous but trusted Rice friends. maybe half a dozen people here already know who I am - I don't want to expand that number any more.

Just the opinion of OptimisticOwl.

OO has left the building.
