It's Mike "freakin" Dunleavey SR
Who cares if he's coached college or not
Tulane Green Wave basketball with MD Sr. will do very very well
Like another said this is actually a hire better than Cal to Memphis for the Green Wave

So we were already 7th out of 8 teams this year, does this hire mean we're gonna be WORSE than Tulane now? I know they beat us but I mean on a consistent basis.

1. It's going to be talked about nationally. When was the last time Tulane basketball was talked about nationally, in a positive sense?
2. When Dunleavey looks a recruit in the eye and says "You want to play in the NBA? I know what it takes to play in the NBA" the kid is not going to be able to disagree.
3. SMU became relevant nationally overnight not just because Brown could coach but also because Brown had an extensive coaching tree that he was able to use to gather an impressive list of transfers from places like Arizona, Villanova, Duke, and even freakin' Illinois State, giving us Nic Moore. I don't know enough about Dunleavey to say whether his pupils are college basketball coaches or not, but if they are (and the numbers suggest he knows one or two) then expect him to upgrade talent on that team TOMORROW.
Let me say this:
Tulane has always had potential, had they ever gotten off their duffs and made an effort. After building a new football stadium and making a pair of impressive hires in football and men's basketball, that day may have come.

TULANE BASKETBALL being scrolled on ESPN with their hire
Amazingly TULANE BASKETBALL has a better coach then Memphis
Yikes
We better really become a football school and get into a P5 conference via football.

RE: Another Experienced Coach making his way to the AAC
Perhaps.
Or perhaps it's because Brown was able to hire people such as his assistant coach Tim Jankovich, whom he hired from Illinois State and brought with him that conference's POY as a true freshman, Nic Moore.
Or Jay Wright, who coached under Brown, who recommended a transfer to him after Brown sat in on his practices for a year:
http://espn.go.com/nba/news/story?id=6041658
Larry Brown's coaching tree may be the most extensive in the country. When you have contacts like John Calipari, Bill Self, Jay Wright, and even Roy Williams 'World Wide Wes' is small potatoes, killer.

SMU SUCKS
Larry will probably quit during the offseason to take a NBDL job.

Yeah...since Dunleavy Sr has been basically semi-retired since 2010 (his final 2 1/2 years coaching in the NBA, he went 63-150 before being fired), maybe his NBA buyout $$ finally ran out and/or this 62 year old wants to ease into full retirement?
Seriously though, its not a bad gamble at all for Tulane...and while Dunleavy never coached a day in college, he will need a very experienced Assoc Head Coach with a lot of college experience and other Asst Coaches with extensive college coaching experience...because a coaching staff clueless on NCAA rules/regulation and lead to trouble in a hurry.
Not sure if Tulane ever has been able to hire a "name" that even some casual fans might recognize...so its not really a gamble at all...as Tulane Hoops has nothing to lose. (Finished in last place in AAC regular season last year).

Yep.
Home run on the surface.
Tulane returns some good pieces as well.

Sadly, most seem to transfer...and Tulane's best big man, Soph Ostekowski, already announced 2 weeks ago that he is transferring out of the program.
Last year, 4 players transferred out of Tulane's program.
In 2013, 6 players transferred out.
If Dunleavy could just stop the outflow of lost players...Tulane might turn into an ok program.

Gotta love UCF fans lecturing on how to build a basketball program.

Is that what you do these days? Bunch of disgruntled Knights fans sit around the Starbucks at Waterford Lakes town center and smack talk the other teams in the AAC? Hey, wanna know what the best part of going to a UCF game is? Nothing.
As bad as it is being a Memphis fan right now I take solace in the fact that at least i'm not back in Orlando taking grad classes at UCF anymore.

Is this becoming a trend? Seems like more former pro coaches are making their way to college or maybe I'm just noticing it more now for some reason.

You have to at least give them credit for making a move. Wish we would make a move.

It seems that the NBA Coaches careers are getting shorter and shorter so those fired (sometimes from multiple NBA teams), they end up in college as the pay is pretty darn good now in college. (Vs say as a NBA Assistant if HC jobs don't open up).
