Former UAB Basketball Prospect Will Transfer
Pardon the school name, but interesting that Justin Coleman has decided to transfer from UA.

We were 2nd on his list.

Highly doubt he would transfer in here (or be allowed to either)

UA Basketball - glitz and glamour, but little substance...

He grew up a fan of theirs as well.
Retin was a senior but you had Dazon Ingram coming back with 3 more years.
Will be interesting to see where he goes.

Only has 2 years eligibility left.

Would have taken Norton's spot possibly had he signed here.

Might he be heading west to sit a year at Stanford?

I think they got an injury redshirt for him this year, so 4 years left...

In any event, it will be interesting to see his (dis)approved teams release list...

Wouldn't Norton get a free-ish scholarship since his Dad is an employee ?

Not sure if they allow a free scholly for that.

If they did, wouldn't they already be using it?

Hate to mention this because ..... but

on a related issue a player who plays more than 1 sport must take the scholarship of the higher program. For example - football & basketball - must take football.

Yes, we know of a coach that would stack football players on the tennis team so that ends that.

I believe that, technically, a player does not need a release from his former school to attend the new school of his choice. Not getting the release simply means the player must pay his own way for that year...

You are correct in that a player on a football scholarship can play other sports, but can't play football while on a "lesser" sport's scholarship. This was set up because many football coaches were known to stack FB players on other school teams as off season conditioning.

Or put a basketball player on the golf team.

I would think this is actually a good development for UAB in terms of recruiting.

Not that we would get Coleman here...but that top prospects in the State are still leaving Alabama to go elsewhere...that the trend did not stop with Johnson.

I expect there is an informal "understanding", though...

They really may not care about him transferring to UAB. They have little need for him now, and the free scholarship may matter more. I'm not sure how much we would even want him at this point.

RE: Former UAB Basketball Prospect Will Transfer
After Knox was hassled over his desire to transfer to UAB -- winding up at UNC -- a second Bama player who wished to transfer said he would not consider UAB because he wanted to avoid being hassled himself. When the Bama BBHC was asked by a reporter if he blocked Knox, he replied that decision came from above him. He never said if it was the AD (Moore) or someone higher.

I wondered recently if the Bama QB who transfered to North Texas wanted to go there or was also avoiding being hassled by Bama administrators.

The fact that Knox could not transfer here is directly related to the reason Todd O'Brien couldn't transfer here. The thing they have in common is Mike Davis. The same Mike Davis who were contacting our players trying to get them to transfer after he left.

Who knows what might be allowed now that he isn't here.
