Jurassic World is the fourth biggest movie of all time and not a fair comparison.

BvS had the Man of Steel (Zach Snyder) problem and it's not kid friendly. If it's not kid friendly it won't have legs.

They are both big budget, special effects driven, PG-13 genre films. In every way possible, a Batman and Superman movie should outgross the 4th Jurassic Park movie. How can you make a Batman and Superman movie and not make it kid friendly? They are f*cking COMIC BOOK CHARACTERS.

The stupidity of everyone involved with that movie is mind boggling.

JW had fifteen years of built up nostalgia. It was released in the summer. It had decent reviews. It was part of a bigger movie franchise than Superman has ever been (Jurassic Park was the world's top grossing film for five years). It was released in the actual Summer. It had decent reviews. Basically it had the same mojo The Force Awakens had six months later.

BvS was a sequel to a film a lot of people didn't like. It was poorly reviewed. It was not for children. It was released in March.

Gods of Egypt was a big budget, special effects driven, PG-13 genre film; is that a fair comparison?

Superman isn't a big grosser worldwide. Batman wasn't until the Dark Knight and TDKR. BvS has grossed more than any other DC movie except TDK and TDKR. It's in the ballpark of what the Harry Potter films and the Hobbit films grossed. Disappointing, but not a flop.

If they had given BVS to someone like Joss Whedon, it would have made Jurassic World numbers. WB gave it to the same guy as MOS and they got another grim, divisive, under performing movie. Surprise!

Every single one of those things are controlled by WB. They could mess up a wet dream.

I liked the movie. I don't care about how much money it makes. I just want it to make enough to have more movies made.

Your whole point is that it's an issue that the movie didn't become one of the highest grossing movies of all time when none of the DC properties have reached those levels except Dark Knight and TDKR, which were both sequels following-up on great will of the previous film. Batman Begins was a great movie and it grossed less than $400 million and was WB's third biggest global grosser (and fourth biggest domestic if you count NL's Wedding Crashers) of 2005.

Marvel has a system and a style that works. WB/DC is trying to do the same. Fortunately artistically but unfortunately for profitability, WB has gone with a unique style that has its own voice. That style didn't click to the point it grossed 1.5 billion. It will gross about $900 million which is a huge success in the movie business. The second movie in the MCU grossed $263 million. And it starred what is arguably Marvel's number two most recognizable character, the Incredible Hulk.

I still think the title was a HUGE turnoff to the casual person. I can't tell you how many times people were like "now WHY are Batman and Superman fighting...I don't get it?" So, based on the title alone, they were hesitant to see the movie and then even less after the tepid reviews.

Marvel has built up a huge franchise goodwill/fanbase and can pull off a "civil war" without it being a huge head scratcher to the public. However, if they had just released one Iron Man and one Captain America THEN tried to do Civil War...

It still had a huge opening weekend here and abroad. Many casual fans had to show up for that to be the case. Problem was the product wasn't good. The audience feedback wasn't good. The massive opening made it seem as if it could have grossed a billion worldwide easy if the audience feedback was decent. But the feedback was not good. Zootopia for instance, released in the same month, didn't have a build-in audience but cuz of the quality is going to outgross BvS here and is on track to gross over a Billion worldwide.

Hopefully they make significant changes moving forward. A lighter tone and better character development could be a start.

Frankly, Disney animated films are a stronger brand globally than Batman or Superman.

Plus Zootopia has gotten some of the best reviews ever for a Disney animated film. The movie would have grossed a hundred million more of Disney had release it instead of Good Dinosaur in November.

It's all about the quality. No one expected Zootopia and now Jungle book to gross over a billion worldwide and that's where they are heading. In fact even Deadpool has been a huge surprise. If BvS had been a well made movie, it would have easily grossed over a billion especially with the massive opening it had. I hope the next few movies end up being better than these last 2.

Zootopia and Jungle Book didn't have Ben freaking Daredevil Affleck

Plus they were both really good movies.

I'll watch BvS when it's out on Blue Ray.

I enjoyed Man of Steel, from what I hear BvS is not as good.

I agree with Lat.

I wasn't a big fan of MoS and BvS is similar in pacing and character development.

I'm no fan of the DC universe, but I did enjoy MoS. I'll be glad to watch BvS on Amazon Prime.

The point is, they are in control of how appealing their characters are. You think Deadpool is more appealing than Batman or Superman or Wonder Woman? When your "vision" or "voice" makes the characters unlikable and places them in non-enjoyable movies, of course the characters have no appeal.

Marvel and Disney understand the principle motivations of the general movie going audiences. They want to enjoy themselves and be entertained and forget about their otherwise miserable lives for 2 hours. I think they make movies to be "fun" and WB/DC makes movies to be "cool" (as if dark/grim/gritty is still the only way these movies can be "cool").

WB wants to emulate its biggest DC success, the Dark Knight trilogy. That is the real reason for the tone of the Superman movies. It's also Snyder's style; but it does differentiate the movies. I think Suicide Squad will give more evidence for the tone they will set.

Deadpool was a low risk high reward endeavor for Fox. It had the right tone; it was the right length; and it had the right actor and the right director. I don't think Ryan Reynolds was any different in Deadpool than he was in Green Lantern. The character had more support from the creatives in Deadpool. I liked Deadpool, but I think BvS is a better movie. But Deadpool is more fun.

Deadpool didn't take itself too seriously, which agrees with the comic. BvS wanted to be artsy, but it was so dour that it turned off too many people. It also kinda set itself up for people not to like it by having no joy like MoS. It basically double down.

Should have created DC Films in the first place.

Finally a good move by DC. Johns is the archetect behind much of the success they're having on TV right now, as well as their comic stuff. Having him plus a movie guy will hopefully be a good combo.
