Speaking as a GenX'er, I disagree. This is ALL we heard - that our generation was full of slackers, we were lazy, angry, cynical, etc.
I'll give you cynical...we grew up watching Presidents resign amid scandal, seeing our government lie (and not be good enough at it to keep from getting caught in it), and for the most part, grew up sitting in front of a TV, getting inundated with targeted advertising. We grew up worrying about nuclear war with the Russians, AIDS, and hijackers. How could we NOT be a little cynical in our viewpoints?
But yet, this so-called "slacker" mentality wound up developing all the new technology that we use today. It wasn't the conventional way that our parents worked - 9 to 5, Monday through Friday (although some of us still do that). We didn't get our gold watches for staying at a company 30 years like our parents do.
In contrast, millennials seem to want things handed to them in a nice package to start off with. I haven't really noticed a problem with work ethic, necessarily. They may work hard once they're given it, but they can't understand that you might have to dig in & pay some dues to start off.
The overall experience I've had with millennials is that they deem most entry-level jobs to be "beneath them."
