The whacky announcer role in Best In Show was based on him. His tv coverage of the Westminster show was a hoot back in the day.

RE: RIP Joe Garagiola 90
Many memories growing up watching baseball on tv with Joe and Vin Scully calling the games. Joe was in the vein of the NFL's "Dandy Don" Meredith without the booze. RIP Joe.

Quote:Growing up in the Hill neighborhood of St. Louis not far from future Hall of Famer Yogi Berra, Garagiola went on to hit .257 during nine years in the majors. His highlight came early, getting a four-hit game in the 1946 World Series and helping the hometown Cardinals win the championship as a 20-year-old rookie.

"Not only was I not the best catcher in the major leagues, I wasn't even the best catcher on my street," Garagiola once remarked.

Joe

Did you mean Curt Gowdy, rather than Vin Scully? I remember him working games with Gowdy, but Scully was just the Dodgers guy, right somebody?

Vin and Joe teamed together on NBC for "games of the week" and a few all star games if I remember correctly. There were some mixes and matches in the 1980's era including Tony Kubek, Bob Costas and Curt. You are correct, Vin has been a long time broadcaster for the Dodgers. For whatever reason, I remember the Scully/Garagiola tandem best.

I was always partial to the Joe/Tony Kubek tandem.
