RE: Unofficial Men's Off Season Thread
Doubtful. Oakland is starting to "recruit itself" at the mid major level. Great crowds, a lifer coach, and being competitive every year. I think you or I could be assistants and still pull some impressive in-state kids.

This is why I'm a fan of Murphy going out of state to get players...it's tough to get top mid major talent in-state when you have to compete with Oakland, Detroit, and the other directionals. Nobles is the only recent exception of us winning a recruiting battle with one of them, but then Murphy goes out of state to get guys like Bond and Thompson to keep us competitive with them. I still feel there is that negative stigma around EMU when it comes to recruiting in this area, which also doesn't help. Murphy has pointed us in the right direction, but not enough to shift the culture just yet. Next year will be huge for us; easily our most talented team in almost two decades. We need to make some noise.

I agree, but Nobles was not highly recruited.

I'll give Luckeyone some nails and a hammer and find him some lumber if he wants to nail me to it, but...

The staff has done some nice things, e.g., JT4, BUT the big one is Nobles.

Nobles was hurt as a senior and had a mediocre year. He signed in November and I really wonder if they would have signed him in April. I honestly thought he was going to be a bust. I couldn't even figure out his natural position. He doesn't look like a SF, ala Bond, and too thin to be a PF. Thought he was green as grass.

Yet, his development has been amazing. I remember a series of posts with BobW where I predicted 2 ppg, 4ppg, 6ppg and 8ppg (over 4 seasons).

Nobles is proving me completely wrong. He is developing...

That has to be coaching...

Nobles had an offer from Detroit and an official visit scheduled with them that was supposed to be the week after he committed. That was my only point with him...that we got a high school kid in this area that had an offer from one of the other mid majors in the state.

Nobles is so smooth and disciplined for someone who was essentially a newcomer. He never gambled defensively and rarely blew assignments, he boxed out (shocking concept!), he made the right passes, he finished well at the rim. You can just tell he's been well-coached throughout his life and the game comes naturally to him. If he starts hitting those jumpers he likes to take, he'll be a stud.

Since I've had my 90 proof decaf coffee all day...

I'm absolutely giddy that we have JT4, Bond and Nobles up front.

Bond has 1.5 seasons experience. JT4 and Nobles ONE each.

These guys are still as green as their road jerseys... They all have a lot more upside, esp. Nobles.

Every March I go to California and Vegas around March Madness time (including MAC tourney week). For 2017 I scheduled my time so I can go to the MAC tourney in Cleveland and then go to Vegas and Cali fornia.

Man, I'm all in for 2016/17.

Rarely shall I buy into the enthusiasm that Sunshine Steve pumps out. Except in this case. 2016-17 could be a really good year!

Last two years we really did not know what kind of team we had during the off season. Literally, there is only one minor question this year: who will replace Nazione.

Not to dismis the great year he had, but EMU has 3 potential answers to that in Nobles, Madray, and LWH.

Go EMU!!

The Canton program is excellent and has produced a handful of college basketball players the past few years. Jimmy Reddy is a great coach (metro west coach of the year), had a undefeated 20-0 regular season this year. He does things the right way and produces great teams but even better young men.

Go EMU!!

Actually Ray you are not parroting me, but Murphy himself.

And I'll quote what he wrote probably 09/2015 for Blue Ribbon Basketball Yearbook:

"This year, I don't know how good we'll be," Murphy said. "After this year, we'll take off and go where we need to be."

If EagleSam has the yearbook, page 240 2nd full paragraph is the location of the quote.

So those picking the team to be say 9 - 9, 10 - 8, etc. in conference were probably consistent with what Murphy, himself, expected.

Remember at the time he was quoted that Murphy had seen Madray and Jones in September campus workout (but not LWH). I have not seen them so I'm going mostly by reputation... (this pertains to 2016/17 so he knew he would lose Naz but had sitouts, two of which were on campus).

O/T, but I just saw on the main MAC board, Ohio's Tony (Antonio) Campbell applied for the NBA draft.

For the MAC sake's (sounds funny) I hope he come back next year.

FWIW, here is what TOL is doing off season. EMU-related:

They signed Rashad Lindsey's back court mate. Both had very similar stats over two years. Both very impressive.

O/T, but not O/T for one of our posters.

The player is a Kent State recruit doing something funny... Still worth two points, but worth more on style points.

O/T crazy story out of UNLV and Texas Tech:

Arkansas-Little Rock coach hired by UNLV and then less than than one week before being hired by Texas Tech.

BTW, my 'way-too-early' look at 2016/17:

With improved play at guard, e.g., three point shooting, more depth at PG, this team could remind me of the 1990/91 team which went to the Sweet 16 led by Marcus Kennedy (an absolute beast in the middle), Neely at PG, the Thomas twins, etc.

I am NOT predicting Sweet 16 or anything like that, but stating we have some of the same pieces.

JT4 can be Marcus Kennedy. Lee and Bond can be the Thomas twins.

Can we get the same level of PG play that we got 25 years ago????

The reason I picked 1990/91 was because our 1996, 98 teams had Earl Boykins and we will probably never seen another one like him at EMU (or the MAC).

I couldn't find a Twitter account for him.

Steele broke the story of his signing on Twitter. Confirmed by Murphy on Twitter.

Anyone has Snapchat, etc. to see if Lindsey confirmed his signing?

We are in a different era than 10, 20, or 30 years ago. Word of signings come through social media by the players.

Trent Perry is transferring. Assume it is PT related. Did not have a good year in 2015/16.

http://espn.go.com/mens-college-basketba...rent-perry

Sounds like he waited for the end of spring semester to announce it.

I'd guess he'll try to find a D-II program.

UofM continues to hire assistant coaches which could hurt local Horizon League teams.

I believe Jermaine Jackson moved from UDM to UofM as an asst coach. His son is a top senior-to-be H.S. PG.

This report says Saddi Washington from Oakland is moving to UofM.

"Michigan basketball coach John Beilein is on the verge of hiring two assistants, espn.com reported.

Oakland University associate head coach Saddi Washington and former Wright State head coach Billy Donlon are expected to be hired, according to the report."
