What I'm trying to wrap my head around on all this is how could ALL of the ambassadors have approved of such a one-sided contract in 2013? It makes me wonder if the final version wasn't presented to them to review prior to the University and Pastner signing the deal? Interesting stuff indeed.

Bowen had the contract written as instructed. To make him a scapegoat for this mess shameful.

Did he though?

You don’t agree to a multimillion dollar contract without legal advice. You just don’t. And if these provisions were somehow added without his knowledge (and maybe others) then the contract could be determined invalid/void.

Another mess on top of the other mess.

Ya, why in the world is the Athletic Director not looking at the final contract for any University head coaching job, especially the Men's basketball program that has been the school's flagship program and is agreeing to pay a coach over $2.5 million per year through 2020.

If that is truly the case Bowen needs to be fired. I am not sure you could get anymore negligent as an AD...

Bowen has been good for the Athletic Depart. This was commonly thought as a great contract in 2013. Live and learn. And a lot of stuff factors in-Bowen just happens to be the only one still around dealing with it.

I do know about great... Regardless, that was before anybody realized the lack of a buyout clause or at least salary mitigation clause (or whatever the legal term is for him getting fired and having to make an honest attempt to find work to offset some of what we owe)...

Bowen had the contract written as instructed. To make him a scapegoat for this mess shameful.

Yet it would be Bowen's own budget that would be hampered if the then Top 10 salaried contract for $2.65 Million per year that Pastner signed in 2013 didn't pan out.

I doubt that Pastner would have turned down that Top 10 deal if it included say a $5 Million buyout.

Bowen had a fiduciary responsibility to his employer, let alone the responsibility to his own future budgets...but those were not done...and when they are not done...others are going to look at "why?".

Incompetence or conscious decision based on past/current business relationships?

Something doesn't add up. How could the AD not be part of the discussions that led to the liquidated damages clause being added to the contract? He's either lying trying to save face or he was negligent by signing a contract without understanding all of the legal implications.

Bowen has a theology degree and a masters in administration/education.

He is NOT a lawyer and should never be the final arbiter of any legally binding contract. The University has legal counsel that is responsible for negotiating and approving ALL University contracts.

It's sad that you see things as a "winning and losing side" of the "Pastner battle."

It says a lot about you.

+1 Tiger2000, exactly right.

Ncrdbl1, you can support Pastner (APR, players not in trouble, no cheating) without going to these ridiculous conspiracy theories.

I never said he should be the final arbiter of the contract. However, regardless of his degrees, as the athletic director he should be able to look through a contract and understand the basic terms and clauses. And he should absolutely be seeing a finalized version and reading through it for every head coach, especially the highest paid coach at the University... He was clearly part of the negotiation. Should he be reviewing the contract to make sure the fine details are correctly spelled out in legalese? No. Should he be reviewing the contract to make sure the major clauses and dollars and cents etc. appear correct? Absolutely, he is the freaking athletic director...

Saluki, I hear you, but disagree. I am not a lawyer, but signed leases for my company for years. My name was on the lease. If there were any addendums that required legal to review, I sent it to legal. I would read, sometimes push back on legal to adjust. Often going back and forth many times.

Point is, the document was my responsibility. It's not like these terms are that difficult. We act like lawyerin' is rocket science, trust me, a lot of lawyers are bozos. Bowen makes the big bucks, and the buck should stop with him.
