Exclamation CA - Chip Long talks Memphis' offensive scheme
http://www.commercialappeal.com/sports/t...03051.html

Quote:Memphis will not huddle, Long said. The quarterback will take snaps both under center and out of the shotgun, and have the freedom to audible out of a bad play at the line of scrimmage or shift his protection to pick up a blitz. The Tigers will also use two- and three-back sets in which backs can shift out wide to exploit mismatches.

At its core, Long said, it's a run/play-action pass scheme.

Quote:Rising senior Daniel Montiel and rising junior Jarvis Cooper, among others, will spend this spring in the H-back role, which can serve as the lead blocker on some running plays but can also split out wide as needed. Players like rising senior Sam Craft and redshirt freshman Tony Pollard may line up in the backfield or on the perimeter as wide receivers.

I'm guessing they have great confidence in the IQ of the QBs on the roster for that. Encouraging.

If its successful, it will wear down the best defenses.

If its not successful, it will wear down our defense.

But its the way to go if your QB IQ is up there.

RE: CA - Chip Long talks Memphis' offensive scheme
From Tom Schad in yesterday's CA:

Quote: --Multiple offensive coaches told me to keep an eye on three second-year wide receivers: Tony Pollard, Mechane Slade and Kedarian Jones. It sounds like Pollard could get some time in the backfield as well, working as a receiver/running back similar to Sam Craft.

-- One note on Memphis' new offensive and defensive schemes: Versatility is the name of the game. The goal on offense is to have players like Craft who can play multiple spots, thereby limiting substitutions and pushing the pace. On defense, Memphis will have a couple hybrid spots: "Tiger" and "Spur." One is a defensive end/linebacker hybrid, the other a safety/linebacker hybrid. We'll learn more about the schemes as we see them in practice in the coming weeks and months.

On paper has Memphis ever had a better QB lineup than what we will have this year?

With the fact that none of these guys have actually seen much playing time, I'd say yes. You may have to go back as far as last year...

Dave said on the radio this morning that he found out yesterday that he is no longer with the team but he didn't know where he was going to land.

Definitely transferring. Tom Schad said he is no longer on the active roster.

But Jamarius Henderson and Genard Avery are staying. This coach knows how to recruit.

Story on ex-Tulane DL coach Kwahn Drake as new offensive analyst for Memphis coach Mike Norvell. http://www.si.com/college-football/2016/...ve-analyst

I'm guessing this a recruiting move as this staff seems serious about LA. Do guys often crossover - defense to offense and vice versa? Not even sure what an offensive analyst does.

Probably lower level FBS or even FCS. He doesn't have the arm strength to play at this level.

And Stewart proved in '14 that he is an adequate back up.

Hmm... I do not know the answer to your questions, but that is certainly interesting.

yes it happens.
Kirby Smart...current coach at Georgia was a defensive coordinator for Alabama. Several years before that? He was a running backs coach for Georgia in 2005. But at most of his stops he is known as a defensive coach.
Tom Landry (formerly of the Dallas Cowboys) was known as a defensive wizard...even invented his own defense the 4-3 (which even then he refined into something different with the 4-3 'flex')
When he became a head coach...Landry then devised an offense to attack the defense he had created...as the 4-3 took the NFL by storm. The rest is history.
