2015-2016 Season-perception vs reality
My issue with him was that he came on this message board under a fake name, built himself up to be a future NBA player, and THEN came to campus out of shape. I wish the kid well, but my advice for him if he wants to be a pro, turn off social media and get to work.

Well, I hope he comes back and reads these comments.

Fella, you blew a hell of a chance. Opportunity was there and you let it slip through your (too) chubby little fingers

If he's as whiny for the "pro" team overseas somewhere as he was here, and doesn't try any harder he won't be "pro" very long.

This is the same group that the minute you question or criticize someone(I got ripped for my disdain for Darius James) on the team, the high horse folks are "he's just a kid" or "what if he reads this." Guess what, so is Pervier. Just an immature kid who prob. will grow up one day once he hits the real world.

I got no issue criticizing him, but you can't have it both ways.

Back on topic. I think the answer is the simplest and most obvious one. Maybe we, individually and collectively, are not as smart as we think we are.

You really don't see the difference? The university spent a lot of time, money, effort, energy bringing this guy to campus. They made a deal that if he did what they told him, played ball the way they wanted him to play, he'd walk away with, at worst, a free education while possibly being part of something memorable. He not only did not live up to his end of the bargain, he now goes on social media and basically blames the school.

You may not have liked the way Darius James played, but he never did any **** like that.

I don't think this will make ESPN. Nobody really cares. Let it wither away.

RE: 2015-2016 Season-perception vs reality
here's a gem:

"No not on the 2016, but on the 2015 posters have talked about how they would have preferred stealing a big from a p5 conference, how his numbers are good but it's only juco, etc. juco has d1 guys everwhere... I over generalized with saying all you guys but I'm just trying to get the point that across that he is being underestimated. Wichita state moved him to dodge city calling him a Kevin love type player, then once they thought he was in their pocket they relaxed and ODU came at him even harder. Payton had a lot of big d1s out of highschool, didn't have the grades, signed d2 and followed the assistant coach to naia. Left after some trouble and has grown incredibly on and off the court since. He's now a 21 year old with a good head on his shoulders ready to get to this next level, help ODU make major noise in the tournament and go play pro ball. Just wait and see, after all the stuff he's been through in the last 4 years, he's got a chip on his shoulder."

I know we don't want to bash anyone but I have to tell you....I am getting one hell of a laugh out of this.

I remember that poster. It was clear that it wasn't an ODU fan but, rather, a Payton Pervier fan. I figured it was a friend, his brother,/parent or a kid that went to his high school and idolized him or something. Never even crossed my mind that it might actually be him. Oh the internet...

I don't remember a lot of Darius James bashing. He wasn't Drew Williamson but a good floor general and a terrific kid. I am so glad he's back at ODU with ODAF.
