OT: "Imagine the Big East, Coast to Coast... Its survival may depend on it."
After last nights exit of Xavier from the tournament, the writers are postulating a nationwide "Big East"... (they may need to finally ditch the name tho)

I thought it was interesting considering the hypotheticals regarding Westward expansion.

A lot of people feel as a national conference could work.

Can't see a "national conference" working... Especially for non-revenue/Olympic sports. Too far to foster rivalries, too divergent in time zones and cultures...

The Big East would be better served to ask "What schools fit the BE model, from Omaha--->east?"
-Saint Louis
-Boston University
-Drake
-Dayton
-Detroit/Mercy
-Valparaiso
(In no order...)

The NYT article tortures itself. The author just wants them to add Gonzaga - without even saying it outright. No new info. Not worth the click.

Oh I see , so it would be a mistake for the American but makes perfect sense for the Big East. What a bunch of "ISH"

Yep. In addition, there are so many contradictions. Says it was disastrous for the Big East to take in football --- then talks about how hurt it was by the football schools departing. They added football to keep them in --- so how could football have been "disastrous"?

The "disaster" was not adding Penn State in 1981 when they had the chance.

Ever watched the 30 for 30 "Requiem for The Big East"? Dave Gavitt (first commish) asked Mike Tranghese (2nd commish) after that 1981 vote what he thought. "We will rue the day." was his response. They could have had their cake and ate it too.

Big East is never going to be the tourney player it once was no matter who they add.

The Big East is doing just fine, but I still think they should have started with Dayton and St. Louis in the mix. Two more large markets and cultural fits with great facilities, fan support, and basketball traditions. Now that Xavier is entrenched, they will never allow Dayton to join, which is a shame -- that is yet another great rivalry that has died with conference realignment.

By not going for the KO blow, the NBE allowed the perception to persist that there are two parallel A-10's.

Who knew the NYTimes still had a sports section...but not shocked to see that the writer was William Rhoden, who almost never actually writes about sports.

Can't wait for St Johns Women's Basketball team flying to the State of Washington for a Tuesday night game vs Gonzaga.
