SFA has won the Southland Conference three years in a row with 32-3 and 29-5 records. They are 27-5 this year with a current 20 game winning streak and have won 25 of their last 27 games. The guy can coach. SFA plays West Va. this afternoon. He's worth a look.

He's going to go somewhere way better than a CUSA school.

Adverse set backs happen in every program (as we in Monarchland recall from just a few seasons back). When they do, weak programs crumble. Strong programs (Charlotte and USM, for other examples) pick themselves up, dust themselves off, and come back even stronger.

WKU is as strong a program as any. You'll overcome this slight (hopefully) set back.

I think Edmonds is gone but I have a feeling McNeal and Hunter will be back...Both were at our women's game last night and our AD was patting both on the back, you would not do that if this was something major for either player....We will recover from this and will happen sooner then most people think...

WKU basketball is highly sought after job and I have complete trust in our AD making the right hire...

I hope we get more facts about the situation but reading between the lines our President was not very happy with Harper the last few seasons...He told a WKU newspaper reporter this was it for Harper to prove himself pretty much...This IMO was the last straw, our AD gave Harper 2 options be fired or resign, he choose to resign....Harper did not have good enough results on the court to with stand any more drama...

well, point shaving would certainly make sense for a coach to resign.

Local writer has confirmation issue would not involve NCAA.

What were you guys paying Harper / what can you afford to pay a new coach?

At least he resigned / his contract was almost up anyway, so you won't have to pay any kind of a buyout. That has handcuffed us a bit recently. We paid Bobby Lutz for 4 years after we fired him. Hired a bargain coach as a result, then fired him and had to pay him a buyout worth 2 years of his contract.

If they can't get it done with the P5 money they're not going to get it done at WKU. I also don't want Horn or Felton back. I mean HorNIT and FAILton. Sheesh.

The only names I've seen listed on message boards that really interest me are Scott Cherry and assistants at Xavier and Wichita State.

But really, none of us have any idea.

The Memphis board lists Pastner as a terrific choice. No chance, huh?

Hopefully we find out if there is more, but I don't believe there is..I think it was as simple as 3 WKU players involved in "something", we don't know what that is yet and our AD and president had enough, last straw coach is fired and they let him resign...Results on the court, off season messes every season, and this contributed to all of this...This is not like someone who has been here 1 season, Harper has been at WKU 8 seasons and was given plenty of chances...His resignation has more to do with off court issues, on the court performance and all the above not just latest incident.....

Our beat writer has stated this nothing to do with any NCAA sanctions, also players involved have zero police reports with WKU or BG....Also hearing still with WKU, so that's why no details over what has happened yet has come out with the 3 players involved yet..

I believe Harper was making around $450k.....We might have to start out paying someone less and take a young hungry assistant coach, we will see...Scotty Davenport, please no, we already tried this Div. II coach thing, and it has not worked out very well for us....Tired of seeing media bring this guys name up, pass...Would be Harper II all over again..

Wow, that really sucks. It seems like that came out of nowhere. I know you guys wanted to get rid of Harper, but not like this. Hopefully you guys can hang on to your roster because I thought you guys would be a force next year.

Selfishly, I have to say if something like this was going to come out, I wish it had been last week before you guys ruined our season. 03-hissyfit

RE: Ray Harper Resigns, Three WKU players suspended
No one worth a crap generally wants to serve out their time at a mid-major. They want to hit the coaching powerball and get to the P5 and maybe daydream about NBA. The number one question a GOOD coach asks is if he can get to where he wants to be by taking the job.

Unless someone has UK or Louisville as their dream and might be afraid of being less desired as WKU coach, I can't imagine too many guys are sitting back thinking WKU isn't where they want to be to move toward their goals.

History says WKU can help you get where you want to be. AD just has to weed them out.

"Cumulative effect" caught up with Ray Harper.Too many messes and off court player issues over the years AND not enough wins to put up with the distractions. This was just the last straw and a convenient incident for the administration to force a resignation. He had time and was given enough chances.

WKU will not tolerate a lack of NCAA appearances--its just who we are.

Are we sure? I guess we could have said same thing last fall when our football team won CUSA championship and this season when former Sun Belt member won basketball...Just stop with that non sense, come on!

It does not matter what conference.WKU fans have an expectation of NCAA appearances. It is in our makeup and we live in a basketball state.

The president and AD know this and will have less patience with coaches than some schools who care less about basketball.

You can call this unrealistic if you wish-it still doesn't change things.
