Tubby Smith has reached an agreement in principle to be Memphis' next coach, a source told @CBSSports. Formal announcement expected soon.

I wish ETSU and Steve Forbes nothing but luck...as you can tell, we like the guy from his days with Pearl.

Wish we could play Memphis again. It's been too long.

I think Tubby is a good pick for Memphis. However I still wish ya'll would have went with McCall.
I will say I'm impressed of how highly the Memphis crowd thinks of Forbes. Makes me feel grateful we have him. I feel good about the upcoming season and the possible recruits he will be bringing in this year.

Memphis is not a great job right now. It's always had an over inflated value.
This article does a good job of describing Forbes' no-win situation at Tennessee, and why he deserved a second chance.

But, the fact remains the NCAA gave him a one-year show-cause ban for lack of cooperation, so Forbes is like a player with four fouls. He can play the game, but the penalty for another misstep will be severe.
For a school with a history of NCAA violations, like Memphis, the risks are exacerbated. I would expect them to be extremely cautious in all future hires -- or, as Buccaneerlover intimates, Memphis may have a win-at-all-costs culture and the sense of caution will have to come from Forbes.

RE: Forbes
yeah...dude says "They like Forbes because his hands are dirty"
actually, that's exactly why we didn't go after Sampson or Forbes...and why we hired Josh last go around.
say what you want about Pastner and Tubby...but they run squeaky clean programs...Pastner graduated his kids, and maintained a near perfect APR all 7 years he was here.

I have always liked Tubby. And he being 64 kind of dismisses the stigma of a coach being too old for a particular coaching position.

As a UK fan, Tubby is "eh" for me. He just wasn't suited for the level of rabid fans that UK has. Nice guy, good coach, but a coach at UK has to be a politician and a coach.

Pretty sure I don't like what you are implying about Forbes. As for comparing Forbes to Tyndall, just wow.. take a pill are something.
Forbes hasn't been squeaky clean, nobody likes to hear that about their coach but let's face it, there were some shenanigans going in Knoxville.
This is a terrible hire for Memphis. Washed out at Kentucky, washed out at Minnesota, and was sub .500 overall at Texas Tech, though they did make the NCAA tournament this year. Tubby's 64 years old, and he's not Jim Boeheim who's 71 and still getting it done. For someone like me who is not particularly fond of Tiger High, this is a GREAT hire. For a team fighting for relevance in an SEC/NBA town and they're neither, this isn't very good.
And I didn't compare what Forbes did to Tyndall, what I'm saying he saw what happened to Tyndall, and after already getting one show cause penalty, he knows if he screws up again and gets caught, he's gonna get the hammer dropped on him.

Do you have something else you would like to share with the class?
All I have ever read about what was going on in Knoxville was Pearl had a BBQ, against the rules (then, now it isn't) minor stuff even then, he asked the recruits and their parents to lie about, (the big no-no) and he lied about it to the NCAA. All I have ever read that Forbes and the other assistants were guilty of was that they were not forthcoming and didn't cooperate with the NCAA.
He made the right choice out of two bad ones, if he had thrown Pearl under the bus he would have been clear with NCAA but never worked in Div I basketball again, he kept his mouth shut, took the penalty and made it back.

RE: Forbes
Such an odd discussion in which Buc fans are simultaneously worried that our excellent new coach Forbes will be hired away but feel he has been and would be again sketchy if not for NCAA hammer time. I've seen nothing but class.

RE: Forbes
Forbes has been class everywhere he has coached, including Tennessee. Pearl was the problem, not Forbes. Pearl put his all assistants and the University if Tennessee in hot water and he payed the price.
Lover. I be willing to bet you have never met Forbes and your insinuations about his character are your delusions.

RE: Forbes
More class:
Forbes to be Umoja Grand Marshal
"The parade's grand marshal will be ETSU men’s basketball Coach Steve Forbes, who will be joined by members of the team along with members of the ETSU baseball, softball and triathlon teams.....
"Davis said one of the newest additions to this year’s festival is the ETSU Marching Bucs, who will be kicking off the festivities on Sept. 30 along with Bucky, the ETSU mascot."
Can't go wrong with that appearance....
