That's how contracts work. What's he supposed to do?

Not blaming him for that, just was saying he usually will not last long enough for the entire length of this contract.

Its debatable the reasoning why he was even fired from the Bears and the Bucs are a terrible franchise and should have never fired him to begin with.

He was the Bears head coach for 9 years; that went well beyond the term of his original contract.

RE: Ward to Illinois
Expectation for Carey to find a replacement for Ward just got huge. We need to with out a doubt get a guy that has deep roots in Florida, a footprint in Alabama, and connections in Texas. Without that we won't survive as a program.

One more thing doesn't our spring practice start Monday? That means we need a replacement tomorrow for them to be brought up to speed on our practice regimen so they can coach the wide outs on Monday.

I did hear the Cubits are available.

We could hire TLL as the wide receivers coach. there, Florida ties.

LOL although I like the sentiment, the next hire needs to be someone who has Florida connections, meaning relationships with high school coaches. Ward knows them all down there. That's what we need if we want to keep that connection.

Copeland is a Miami native. He's spent most of the last 10 years in the plains but he may have some connections in the area at least.

I hope Carey can improve his communication and loyalty skills with his asst. coaches, along with a few other things!

Depends how they are leaving. If they are getting fired ala Cole, that isn't good. If they are taking huge pay increases to go to schools with bigger budgets it is a sign that the program hires good coaches that other schools want. This can help attract other talented FCS or DIII coaches who are looking to advance their careers. If they perform well at NIU they could put themselves in line for a nice payday too. It's a pain for NIU, but is a good problem and the price of not having a P5 budget.

Does NIU pay better than top FCS programs like NDSU, ISU and UNI?

Carey makes more than NDSU coach. NDSU coach has a base salary of 261k and with bonuses has made up to 366k.

Well 10k over a 40, 50, 60 base is %wise a good jump. But it's not only about the money it's about moving up and getting more exposure at the D1 level.

Yea, I'm not worried about the coaching aspect. I'm worried about the recruiting aspect and much of it had already started for next season.

He did have the best connections but Lovie will have him recruiting the top rated prospects. We won't be competing with them too much. Illini wants to be the next Michigan and Ohio State.
