RE: 2016-2017 Men's Basketball
Hall and Andrews are not on scholarship --- yet ... as they have academic work to do. And IIR correctly, Ridenour came to Kent as a walk-on.
Until one or all are 'officially' on scholarship ... I actually believe Kent - on paper - has one or two scholarships still to give.

I doubt very seriously this can/will happen. You had better believe we need and want a minority on staff.

Good point, and should not be overlooked. I really hate losing our coaches to other MAC programs.

I think you're spot on on this. I'd like to see Justin Greene move up to a paid spot. Not sure if they'd leap frog him over McKee though. I saw a thing about Demetric Shaw doing some motivational speaking at a local HS in the RC last week. I guess he's running a basketball academy in Texas now. There was a comment in the article about him saying that Gary Waters has told him coaches can have positive impacts on a lot of young people. I certainly hope we've already gauged his interest.
Losing Haynes really hurts though. This is now the 3rd former player turned very promising assistant that we've lost in recent memory. The other two (Gates and Mincy) are currently assistants in the Big10 and SEC. Those two, and Haynes, have the advantage of having their roots in exceptional recruiting areas (Detroit, Chicago, and Memphis). The part that hurts the most about this is we're not losing these guys because they're getting better gigs, each made a relatively lateral move when leaving Kent. The reason we're losing them is because we don't pay our coaches competitive salaries. That needs to change yesterday.
I'll be curious to see if Haynes leaving costs us any players or recruits. Here's hoping another assistant had the lead on BJ Duling...

RE: 2016-2017 Men's Basketball
The question is, how much of a market is there in 2016 for "mid-major" basketball? The college basketball landscape has changed tremendously in my lifetime. Most fans, and I would even hazard a guess that a majority of students at most "mid-major" schools, really only care about the so-called "power 5" types. How many schools have the resources to viably keep up? The inflation in coaching salaries boggles the mind. Certainly, there are big-time programs that are self-sustaining, and even a few that make a profit. But, I assume most D I schools are cash-strapped, with no end in sight.

YES! Drop football to a lower division! We don't have the resources it's the worst program athletically or academically at KSU! A lot of bad news for men's hoops after the Administration states that this program would be a priority

These are valid points - there are some remote areas where a college basketball program may be the only game/entertainment in town. Overall attendance is falling as the networks are saturating every night of the week with games. College students like to stream games on their phones. The big schools have plenty of wealthy alumni with disposable income to travel - I am amazed how many white-haired folks (like me) are in the TV audiences, especially during the tourneament.

And even with all those white haired folks many of the arenas are half filled or less until the final four. It's nice to watch all those games on TV but soon they will played in very small arenas with something akin to a laugh track running in the background to give the impression of crowd noise. I don't know how many of you watched the Las Vegas 16 (called that even though they only had 8 teams!!) from Mandalay Bay. The crowds were humorous on all three nights. Too many meaningless games.

I'll say this for him. In the hs clips I watched it looked like his range extends well beyond the three point arc.

Not sure that Yavari Hall is completely in the fold as of yet. Does anyone have an opinion or concern for Hurley? He seems well traveled but not in many conversations. It seems that if he were really a difference maker maker, he could have been put into action this past season. After all, at one time we were playing for first place.

If he sticks around there is no reason why KSU shouldn't get some production out of him by the time he is a junior/senior. "Some production" is relative but this is the flagship program after all.
