Frank Martin
Frank Martin was head coach at Kansas State for 5 years, then inexplicably left for South Carolina in 2012.

His record:

Kansas State:
2008: 21-12, NCAA tourney bid
2009: 22-12, NIT
2010: 29-8, Elite 8 in NCAA tourney
2011: 23-11, NCAA tourney round of 32
2012: 22-11, NCAA tourney round of 32
South Carolina:
2013: 14-18, no postseason
2014: 14-20, no postseason
2015: 17-16, no postseason
2016: 24-8, NIT?

Any ideas why he left KSU for USC? It just doesn't make sense to me.

Martin and the K-State AD reportedly despised each other.

It's Kansas state! It might not be in the middle of nowhere. But you sure can see it from there.

That wouldn't make a whole lot of sense - he stayed there 5 years as HC, and waited until 2 years AFTER his elite 8 run to leave. Was this widely reported? I don't remember hearing it.

Anyways, it always seemed a slight step down to me. Unusual that a coach would win 5 NCAA tourney games in 3 years and then make what is at best a lateral move.

It's an hour and a half from Kansas City, which is a much bigger city than Columbia, SC.

I get that he grew up in Miami and may prefer a bigger city. But if he really wanted a school in a bigger city, I'm sure he had a lot better options than South Carolina.

I don't think he did. During that time. He was catching a lot of flak for hitting one of his players.
