The old ACC used to be Clemson, Maryland, and whichever other team happened to have a good season.

Since 1980, the only ACC teams with a worse record than Maryland were Wake Forest and Duke.

Maryland has the third most ACC football championships overall and since 1980 behind Clemson and FSU.

MD's football decline was a direct function of President Kirwan's reaction to Len Bias's death in 1986. He essentially ran off Bobby Ross who went to GT and won a share of the National Title in 1990.

This is the old wound at MD that has never healed.

Some decisions have ramifications that last generations.

When VT's president and WVa opposed post season bowl games, it relegated both to the wilderness - VT for 50 years and in some sense WVa is still in the wilderness (pun intended). When SC got mad over the 800 SAT rule and refused to corral Frank McGuire, their hissy fit and exit from the league kept them in the wilderness for two decades. What NC State did to Valvano and to the other programs have yet to be cured. What Kirwan did ultimately drove MD out of the ACC and their football has not recovered and likely never will. The split at Clemson over Danny Ford has taken nearly 20 years to stitch.

GT may have made a similar generational mistake when they raised academic standards for athletes about 10 years ago, IIRC. (I no longer remember the details but it used to be easier for athletes at GT than it is now, not that it was easy by normal univeristy standards).

How far back do you want to go? Other than a brief stint in the 70's, the Terps didn't exactly light it up. From '73-'79 they won 60 games. But from '56-'72 they were only 65-105. For the last 58 years of their ACC tenure, they were below .500.

I just looked up 1954-2013:
Maryland vs. ACC: 0.515 <-- not losing
408 total games
208 wins, 196 losses, 4 ties

Here are Maryland's records from 1972 through 2013
Year W-L-T
2013 7-6
2012 4-8
2011 2-10
2010 9-4
2009 2-10
2008 8-5
2007 6-7
2006 9-4
2005 5-6
2004 5-6
2003 10-3
2002 11-3
2001 10-2

2000 5-6
1999 5-6
1998 3-8
1997 2-9
1996 5-6
1995 6-5
1994 4-7
1993 2-9
1992 3-8
1991 2-9
1990 6-5-1
1989 3-7-1
1988 5-6
1987 4-7
1986 5-5-1
1985 9-3
1984 9-3
1983 8-4
1982 8-4

1981 4-6-1
1980 8-4
1979 7-4
1978 9-3
1977 8-4
1976 11-1
1975 9-2-1
1974 8-4
1973 8-4

1972 5-5-1

To be honest, it's worse than I remember, but there were still some very good stretches in there. Clearly, '73 to '85 were the golden years for them.

No, the golden years were in the 1950's. Don't make the mistake of thinking the ACC was formed out of whole cloth in 1953. If you want a real understanding of the schools you have to go to the Southern Conference records from 1921 to 1953. That's where you find the real history of MD, Duke, UNC, VT, UVa, NC State, Clemson, and SC.

We could bring Maryland back and stay at 15 teams until Norte Dame joins for football. 07-coffee3

I think you'd find the older generation(s) of Terps fans to be extremely excited and happy to do that.
