MAC Tournament Attendance
MAC website box score for BG/Akron no attendance given. Women's semifinal CMU/EMU 1,021. Not so great. Wonder if the AK/BG attendance was bad.

RE: MAC Tournament Attendance
We've been at the games since Thurs. evening. Akron, OU and Buffalo have had decent followings. Talked with someone from the MAC offices and attendance wise, they were really hoping for an Akron/OU finals.
BG did not have a good following Fri. night. But without a doubt, Miami had the worst following. They brought no cheerleaders or pep band, and Im not exaggerating when I say, they might have had 100 fans, but no more. It was actually embarrassing.
Overall, not the best year for attendance tho.

RE: MAC Tournament Attendance
Having attended games at Millet Hall, not surprising with the low attendance. They don't support their basketball program. So sad, what else is there to do in Oxford? But then again EMU is the same way. Why don't the better MAC players go to UT then?

Crowd size looked okay on the screen. Hope attendance, on average, is increasing.
Thanks for posting the attendance stat.

Less than half of what HS wrestling pulled in for three days at Columbus - but split into 5 sessions. That can make the totals misleading. Nonetheless, the crowds were much bigger and the finals had about 12,000.
BTW - Congrats to two Toledo area wrestlers - Josh Venia (Central Catholic) and Matt Stencel (Clay) for becoming 2-time state champs. Stencel gets a pin in the finals against the same kid from Lakewood St. Eds he beat last year 15-1 and pinned at Ironman in 36 seconds. After the match, the kid told Stencel - "you know you can't beat me..." Apparently his 4-1 win at districts (and Stencels only loss in nearly 2 years) went to his head a bit....

Not bad- just 700 fewer than the UT women draw for a Wednesday night game against Northern Kentucky.

Despite what the commissioner thinks they need Toledo to be relevant they have the most rabid fan base in the MAC.

RE: MAC Tournament Attendance
I guess I didn't realize it was 7 sessions at the MAC tourney. That is pretty pathetic for attendance. Wonder how much it costs to rent the facility and if they can even make money off that tourney. Seems unlikely if you consider the schools pay for the travel, hotel and food costs. TV money can't be that much.
Remember when they held the tourney at Crisler Arena? How pathetic is it when a DI conference rents a facility from another DI school?
Then it was in Toledo - first at Centennial, then over to the convention center. Where else has the vagabond tourney been?

I believe the kid said in a "6 minute match." In other words, he was saying Stencil would have to pin him, which he did the second time. Stencil admitted he didn't do what he was supposed to do before the first match. Lesson there.
As for the attendance, yes and a local high school game pulled in over 4000. I don't understand that arguments that these sports, wrestling and hockey can't be relatively self-sustaining in this market? Nearly one fourth of girl's high school hockey players find their way to a college team. That's a higher proportion than any other sport. You want your kid to get $ for college, teach them hockey.
That's called potential to get ahead of the crowd that our local high schools (with encouragement from our local University) should be turning to kinetic. Do for hockey and wrestling what Old Dominion and Iowa did in women's basketball.

ps: oh yeah, whatever the context, not good sportsmanship shown by the St. Ed's kid, I agree.
