O'Banion is out as women's coach, report says
The Record-Courier is reporting that women's coach Danny O'Banion will not have her contract renewed.

O'Banion went 21-98 (a .214 winning percentage) in four seasons. Her teams never won more than seven games.

Developing story is on the blog at http://wbbflashes.com.

It's too bad it didn't work but this had to happen. I now know why the team wasn't at the Q today as they had been the last couple years.

We have had an unfortunate history of hiring high quality individuals who just can't get their teams winning. Doug Martin and Dean Pees come to mind.

The announcement is official. Nielsen says national search will start immediately.

I think she is the first coach who Nielsen hired who he has also fired.

I'm continuing to update the story at http://wbbflashes.com. Later I'll post my analysis of what she did and didn't accomplish.

I wonder what the roster will look next year? I hope we won't be starting over with players leaving and recruits opt out of their commitments.

Now if we could only work on the men's side......

On the blog at http://wbbflashes.com:

Some things we learned from the O'Banion era: Statistics on how bad things were. Of point guards, three-point shooting, defense and turnovers. How long it takes to get into a recruiting cycle. And some things that are more important than basketball.

I've posted some thoughts on what KSU might look for in its next women's coach, along with a few names, on the http://wbbflashes.com blog.

It has been 20 days or so since O'Banion was let go/fired. Any info or rumors surrounding the candidates that Nielsen/staff are chasing/interviewing?

Nothing I've heard so far. Coaches tend to gather at the final Four this weekend.

O'Banion wasn't named until mid-April, so we may be a few weeks away.

Others may have better sources inside the department than I do.

I have been informed Kent State interviewed the YSU Head Coach today. This was the second interview for this candidate.

I saw that today, too.

John Barnes is one of the first people I thought of for the opening.

He's got a nice track record as a head coach at YSU and Michigan Tech, plus time as an assistant at Green Bay and a couple of Big Ten schools.

He knows the area and its recruiting footprint. His team seemed very well coached when it played Kent State.

His predesessor at YSU was Bob Boldon, who went to OU. That turned out pretty well.

Sounds encouraging. It's good to know the AD wasn't telling all in the Record Courier article. It would have been pretty bad if after 3.5 weeks he hadn't even interviewed anyone. This program can only go up from here.

Yes, Allen Moff of the RC confirmed that is the case. If Barnes is hired, seems like the budget from O'Banion to him would have to increase as O'Banion had no head coaching experience and Barnes would have been a head coach @ 2 different programs. Hopefully he can turn this program around. Korinek & Lurken should be (2) nice pieces to build on for whomever the new coach is. Not sure how talented Zenobia Bess is, but she sat out last year transferring from Illinois State and has (2) years left (6'1" Forward).

Lurkens a senior next year so he needs to show he can develop players like James, Cross, Stephens and others. Lurken can help him hold it together next year but isn't going to be the future.

I was hearing this yesterday but held off on posting it:

@ChadK426: I've learned that John Barnes will not be leaving Youngstown State for Kent State, and will remain the Penguins WBB Head Coach.

Coach Barnes turned down a big pay raise with this decision. Tressel likely got through to him.

There's a new update on the search on the wbbflashes.com blog.

No new names that I know of, but the post has a list of mid-major openings. One is at Eastern Michigan. Coach Tori Verdi just took a job at Massachusetts.

The YSU head coach wasn't the first candidate to pull their name out of the hat. It appears the top two choices have opted for a new gig and to stay in their current position.

Kent State doesn't appear to be a desirable place for viable candidates at the moment.

dlFLASH

So another coach chose to accept a different head coaching job than Kent?

Not hugely surprising, though I hope it wasn't the Bloomsburg State coach who went to Colgate, which was a worse team than KSU.

My guess is that we'll end up with someone who's currently an assistant at a Big Ten school. I have no names in mind at all -- just a guess.

I still think there's potential in this team, especially with a good X's and O's coach.

I have to hope.

The Wright State women's coach, by the way, went to New Mexico for $250,000 a year. That's way out of KSU's price range.

The Record-Courier is reporting that Maria Marchesano, head coach at Division II Walsh University, is interviewing today for the opening.

Marchesano just finished her third season at Walsh, where her teams were 20-9, 20-10 and 12-16.

More background on her on the blog at http://wbbflashes.com.
