NCAA And DoD Concussion Study
http://www.ncaa.org/about/resources/medi...sion-study

9 schools have been added to bring the total number up to 30. Department of Defense that does Army, Navy and Air Force involved.

The 30 schools that are involved in this study come from D1, D2, D3 and HBCUs. This is one example that I am trying to point out that NCAA should consider revamping the levels by moving schools up.

Indiana, Michigan and Wisconsin are leaders in this. Temple and Penn are 2 of the 9 added this year. Over 170 more schools from all levels want to get involved. I am not sure who are on this research issue. I do think for a better study? Get more schools involved from all levels to get a better case study which includes NAIA, USCAA, NCCAA, and NJCAA levels. Since P5 schools do get junior college transfers, it would help to know if those players had concussions at that level to keep a closer eye on them.

Will the new Zero1 helmet solve football’s concussion problem?

Helmets are really not part of the concussion issue, since no helmet will prevent concussions. Blunt force trauma is the problem.

It's the rattling of the brain inside the skull that causes concussions. No helmet can stop that unless it finds away to absorb the hit fully and keeps the head from whopping natural from one side or the other.

No helmets would solve the majority of issues. Rugby is an equivalent example. While there will be some concussion issues without helmets, the impact is greatly reduced since the tacking techniques have to change which seems to be the the issue with football.

The thicker soft shell helmets wont completely prevent them---but they can certainly reduce the movement within the skull cavity because they actually do absorb much of the force and slightly increase the time over which the deceleration occurs. This--if coupled with changing tackling tactics probably would make a significant difference in the concussion rate. My concern with the soft shell helmets is that you'd end up with more neck injuries because the helmet wouldnt slide as well on the turf (the giving nature of the soft outer shell would be more likely to "stick" in place if one fell head first). Thats just a "gut feeling" on my part. I know of no research on that aspect of the helmet.

Take the face guards off and you can stop a lot of concussions. Fear of breaking your nose, busting your lip or looking like a hockey player will eliminate most of the tackles resulting in concussions.
